Spam and the other cats at website designer Darcy Dupres’ house are frantic with worry. Darcy walked out the door two (missed) wet meals ago and didn’t return or send anyone else to look after her beloved furry friends. The other cats think that she has abandoned them, but her office cat and (unbeknownst to her) protégé, Spam, suspects darker forces are at work.
Darcy’s last project was helping a suspicious character who called himself Marcel de Montreal with a dating website for vampires and the women who dig them. Darcy thought Marcel was playing and besides, he paid her a lot of kitty litter to design the site.
But before she can finish, the self-proclaimed vampire announces that he is coming to visit, and Darcy disappears. That and the–duh–black billowy figure with the white face and red eyes peering through the window seem like a dead giveaway to Spam.
Using the computer knowledge he learned at his human’s side, Spam escapes to the world beyond his home to find Darcy and save his family. When the other cats are rounded up and hauled to the shelter, Spam’s only allies seem to be a hungry raccoon, some friendly deer, observant otters and the fact that Marcel happens to be allergic to cats.]]> 180 K.B. After a hilarious scene in which he talks an eagle out of eating him by citing environmental concerns he heard on TV, he befriends (sort of) a raccoon who is angling for a permanent place at the food bowl, a deer informant who uses her vast network of urban deer to assist his search, and the police dog next door.
This is not a whodunit because Spam has a very good idea who took Darcy. His challenge is to bring her disappearance and the culprit to the attention of the authorities and in the meantime find and rescue his human so she can stop being enthralled by the vampire and get back to being staff for her cats. To that end he actually does face coyotes, cars, and shelter dudes. But he uses his knowledge of technology, his new friends and most of all, his love for his Darcy to save her from a fate worse than and including death.
Containing no graphic sexual scenes or nightmare-inducing violence (though perhaps occasional mild profanity), the story is suitable for readers from 8 to 80 who love cats, humor, and paranormal mysteries. ]]> 4.33 2011

A spoof on romantic vampire books, this is the story of a young cat, one of a large household of cats, whose human, Darcy, disappears. The hero, the computer literate Spam, believes she has been taken by a vampire for whom she was building a website, leaving her feline family without someone to open their cans, refill the kibble and water bowls, empty their litter trays or watch the Critter Channel with them. When a pair of thugs break into the house to steal Darcy's desktop computer, Spam escapes the house and for the first time in his life, is in the great outdoors. He has been told that the outdoors consists primarily of cars that will crush cats, coyotes who will eat cats, and shelter dudes who take cats to a place where they are eventually put down for the "long dirt nap."
