An interesting premise with an unorthodox MC, unfortunately ruined by unfamiliarity with litrpg conventions. The MC keeps switching between being a powergamer and a total idiot, and constantly has to be given cheat skills. Instead of introducing any companions, she gets mental clones and it quickly gets tiresome. Side characters are introduced for no reason, with zero relation to the MC.

The worst sin is that the story constantly points at interesting ideas before having the MC not engage with them at all. Terribly boring. Some of the characters are interesting, but the writing style is just dreadfully dry. I couldn't keep track of what was going on because I kept losing interest in the story. There's a good amount of jokes, but the vast majority fall flat and just aren't that funny.

SJM cannot write a paragraph without succumbing to awe of her own characters, talking about how unique and special and omg-so-powerful they are, but omg! The villains will totally be overpowered too and the heroes are against unstoppable odds! ...Except not, because Aelin and company absolutely destroy every obstacle Erawan throws at them without any trouble. There's no tension, no actual drama.

Also, for a series where there's supposed to be a decent amount of romance, the pairings are awfully evident, from miles away, and they're not even developed much! Characters randomly decide to confess their love and jump each other's bones at the blink of an eye, then have stupid, nonsensical fights that then get resolved in less than a page. It's horrid. Aelin's relationship with Rowan is completely wasted, because there is no relationship, just Aelin thinking how much she wants to screw him, then actually screwing him, then forgetting all about it until the next plot point has been reached. They don't talk, there's no touchy-feely stuff, nothing.

One good thing, though, is that Chaol does not appear (or even get mentioned much) for at least half the novel (I stopped then, but maybe he appears later?), which is great because he's such a whiny, annoying character. Yay for that. Though, knowing SJM, if he reappears, he'll probably turn out to be secretly Erawan's grandchild or something.
