I don't think I'm cut out for this kind of historical fiction. What I read (through chapter 3) was a recount of events, dates, figures, and places that I couldn't keep straight and honestly had little interest in. I was hoping for more momentum and plot.

Not sure if I've burned myself out on Reacher books, or if this genuinely wasn't as good as the previous books. Regardless, it's better than season 4 of the television series.

But no matter, the first half of the book was already convenient and airtight to the point the reader knows it's not that easy. From there, it's not that hard to determine what actually went on.

The pacing (in the first half, especially) is slow by any means, especially for a thriller. None of the characters are likeable or relatable. Every main character is a mustache twirling caricature of a villain. The side characters are bumbling redneck morons (we're stealing catfish at night with cat food! yee haw!!) or another generic stereotype. There's no dimension to anyone. The prose is nothing special and the book has some.... interesting imagery. "the way his mother always smelled vaguely vaginal". "She had the disgusted look of a high school biology student confronted with a dripping pig fetus". Maybe that's what passes for edgy, or funny, but it's not my thing. Some sex scenes seemed peppered in there just to check a box off a list. If I wanted to read smut, I'd read smut. I'm trying to read a thriller, here.

The ending is incredibly unhinged. Yes, the entire book skirts around barely believable, but the ending pushes it into completely unbelievable. Everyone's a loser, nobody learns anything, there is no moral of the story. But our heroine can do no wrong and everything goes according to plan! The convenience! There's some decent sized plot holes baked into the book, but I guess could be dismissed as shoddy police work. The ending felt rushed. Pieces fell together very conveniently, and made sense to a point. Some events and character motivations no longer made sense afterwards, I would've liked to hear a little more of how events wrapped up. I have a LOT of questions that unfortunately will remain unanswered.

I got to the 80% mark and there were too many suspenseful threads getting tossed around. I ended up skimming through the next 20% and really only reading the last chapter. never has an author inflicted so much emotional damage on me. I've read some sad books, yeah, but this was me crying on the floor, heart tossed in glass, forced to watch the break in scene of John Wick, while Jay Kristoff stabs me repeatedly with a starmetal sword with 6" missing off the end.

I bought the first book because it was beautiful, and read this one for closure. They are two of the most striking books in my collection so they have a safe home. If they weren't so pretty? ahh, we would have some issues.

I read To Kill a Shadow several months before this one came out, and this book was not kind to returning readers. Unless you have an ironclad memory, you need to read these books back to back. The book starts immediately after the events of book 1 and does not hold your hand. You are expected to know what is going on and the characters. You will not be given any reminders.

I think this duology could have been condensed into one novel. 75% of the book felt like Jude and Kiara just making googly eyes at each other and fighting their monologue of internal feelings. The obstacles faced seemed like complete filler, with no meaningful world building or character development being produced. The growing powers seemed to be at random and the characters just accepted it. Tidbits of lore opened each chapter but were never followed up on. What was the relationship between Juniper and the other characters? Where is the love god that was briefly mentioned and then never revisited? What happens to the mist now? What about the mist creatures? Harlow? What is going on with Starlight? (I know the very end briefly touches on it, but I would have loved to learn more about her). I didn't feel a particular sense of urgency with the plot. We already knew from the first book nobody is going to die, love will keep us alive!

Overall, it seemed like a YA version of the Mistborn trilogy, with so much more angst and passion and romance.

From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

This needed more editing, several typos, inconsistent punctuation and capitalization, had no plot, but I don't care. This book has heart and soul and is silly and I will put it up against the ACOTAR series any day of the week. Elisabeth Wheatley's worldbuilding is excellent. Readers are given a portrait of the land and culture that is memorable and easy to digest. The characters are well thought out, have clear personalities and motives, and interact well with each other and the world. I did initially feel the first half of the book was sluggish without real plot momentum, but the character/world building fleshed out set up for an excellent second half of the book.

The arranged marriage and relationship seemed believable. Brynn, our leading divorcee heroine, accurately captured the thoughts and feelings of a post-divorce woman navigating love again. The first half of the book had me genuinely wondering if the marriage would work out romantically- I could see it both working out or our lead couple turning out to be just friends married for political advantages.

Cenric is a shockingly wonderful, communicative, and respectful man. In a time of edgelord shadow daddies having pissy fits they have to spend a night away from their fate bound mate, Cenric is a refreshing breath of air. The romance is wholesome and beautiful between the two and reminds me what the real standards for book boyfriends are. There are no dramatic miscommunications, or really much drama between these two. It's so cozy.

I felt like the book ended a bit abruptly but I'm excited to see what lies ahead for Cenric and Brynn. Pieces have been put into place to set up for an epic political war. I would have liked to have been "reminded" more/have the characters show more interest in the mysteries of why Brynn was so hastily shipped to the middle-of-nowhere (I anticipate this will be a point of book 2) to create more urgency and suspense with the plot.

The romance is wholesome and beautiful between the two and reminds me what the real standards for book boyfriends are. There are no dramatic miscommunications, or really much drama between these two. It's so cozy.

I felt like the book ended a bit abruptly but I'm excited to see what lies ahead for Cenric and Brynn. Pieces have been put into place to set up for an epic political war. I would have liked to have been "reminded" more/have the characters show more interest in the mysteries of why Brynn was so hastily shipped to the middle-of-nowhere (I anticipate this will be a point of book 2) to create more urgency and suspense with the plot.

It kind of loses it's effect when you remember he's a teenager. Why haven't people overthrown the king when his righthand man is a moody teenager subject to storming off and brooding broodily?

The plot is enjoyable if you don't mind wading through the mush of the romance. I was intrigued by the lore bits that started each chapter, and the mystery of what happened to the sun. I did find the plot dragging on during the second half of the book. A lot of it could have been cut if Jude and Kiara stopped making googly eyes at each other and monologuing about their undying devotion to each other. Several plot twists at the end secured my readership of the second book. I found books like Mistlands, ACOTAR, and Fouth Wing to get too complex plot-wise. This is a gloriously easy read. The plot is gentle, the cast of characters brief and distinct, but it still generally holds my attention.
