This book is old, perhaps 1970s-80s. I was rummaging through .25 books at Goodwill today, read the blurb on the back and when I went back to get it, it was gone. Still kicking myself, why didn't I take a picture. Spent the last two hours on google & this site trying to find it. The blurb started with "A widow by 24 or 25" in a loveless marriage. I think he might have abused her. To save either her land or her people, she has to remarry and is betrothed to another man, I think he is French. He is portrayed as a brusque man but turns out to be kind to her and declares that he won't force her to have sex unless she is ready. The first page was an excerpt of a conversation between them in which he convinces her, "I won't force you but if I could, here's what I would do to you" type of thing. I believe the story is set in a rural area. The book was in English, but a kind of old-timey English which makes me think it's either old, 1970s, or the story is set way in the past. The text on the cover was glossy with a picture of an intertwined couple, typical of a romance novel. Will update if I can think of any other details. Thank you.
