This isnt a story of the typical heroism , mariam isn't a your girl boss protagonist. She isn't katniss starting a rebellion, or quick witted like leisel . she is ordinary, pitiful even , illiterate and has no family support. She isn't wanted by anyone, abandoned by her father , hated by her husband. You see her struggles and a will to change her fate which often fails . She's like us , someone who can't run away from her destiny and carries that pain in silence.

On the contrast there's laila. She is bought up in a progressive family, adored by her father , loved by her crush. She has dreams and aspirations and all the means to achieve it.

You see their journey, their tragedies, and finally collision of their fates. A pure friendship born out of shared trauma , a found family when everyone else abandons them and a sacrifice done out of love.

I liked how the story was based on facts and not just mere fantasy tho the author got so engrossed in the historical aspects that I feel like the storytelling fell off somewhere. The side characters felt really one dimensional at times, it seems like proper justice wasn't given to their story but they were just introduced for the sake of it. Couldn't understand the thought process behind some of lakshmi decisions like her marrying a non Muslim girl to her son in spite knowing so well the fate it would lead to.

Overall it may not be an exceptional book but surely worth the read, got to know about a lot of history i was unaware of ]]>
