At its core, this story is an upper YA mystery with notes historical fiction, romance, and fantasy. Some of the things I liked about it were the demisexual representation and affirmative consent. It's valuable to normalize that for a younger audience. This book does feel borderline YA for me. The main characters are 18 & 19 with jobs and live independently, so the setting feels more grown up while the pacing and prose feel very YA. The romance is also a nice slow burn that feels believable for the characters. The mystery around Francis Gladwell really drives the plot to the point where I don't think the story changes too much with the magic removed. That said, for the mystery being so central to the story, I found the resolution to be rushed. We get thrown multiple suspects who were never really considered in the last 10% of the book, so their motives feel flimsy and underdeveloped. A good mystery should have the clues for the solution scattered throughout the book and it didn't feel like enough clues before the ending to support it.

This starts as a story about a cat, but quickly unfolds into a story about family and the impacts of war. Reading this felt like sitting down for an afternoon with an older relative and talking about everything and nothing. There's an ease to which the story flows and the prose is effortlessly readable, while being profound enough to stick with you.
