"4.5 for this BANGER (literally) of a story!

It's so easy to get roped into this one. The stakes are immediate, the characters conflicted, and the tone clear--a dystopian story through and through. I read majority of it in 2 days because it had me GRIPPED. It's a very quotable story with lines that'll punch you square in the chest--I got teary-eyed a handful of times.

Only things that kept it from that full 5 stars were how severe and constant the injuries were and the ending-- (view spoiler)

This novella hooked me from page one to the end!
I particularly loved how the vampires were constructed (the fact of them being colourblind added so much to the story as we see our FMC describing colours through songs) and how they were modelled after Korean zodiacs was a fun touch.
The seasons were used as an interested anchor and symbol throughout the text, and the imagery through which they were portrayed was immersive.
The book also has beautiful illustrations throughout that made the reading experience even more enjoyable.
As is explored in the beginning of the book, the FMC is autistic. I loved this detail and how it influenced communication throughout the book. But I do wish we seen a little deeper into this outside of communication and social settings. Overall the representation was well done and it is clear the author sought feedback on this aspect and drew on actual experiences of autistic individuals rather than stereotypes.
