I've been wanting to read this book for a while now, and I'm really glad I finally did. Honestly, I was looking to take a break from books with obvious, traditional tropes, and I'm happy to say I succeeded. The book is a little slow in its pacing, and it's set in a prison the whole time, yet I found myself reading it at every opportunity. It isn't high stakes, but rather introspective and quiet, with a lot of loose threads that perfectly come together in the end. One thing I really adored was that, as the book progressed I wasn't able to accurately predict what would happen next, as is the case with a lot of books. It really felt distinct from other books, with this rare, almost comforting quality. It's set in a world that isn't too tricky to understand, and I found it interesting that most character's intentions were clear-cut, but Kiva's motivations remain a little unclear, until the end, of course. It was nothing like what I expected, but a refreshing break from your typical fantasy blueprint book.
