"Osama Siddique’s Who Knows the Bounds of Desire is, for me, a profoundly unsettling meditation on civilizational dystopia—not as a sudden catastrophe, but as the slow death of a city and its moral, social, and institutional fabric. Lahore decays through accumulated compromises: political corruption, class inequality, institutional complicity, historical amnesia, and the normalization of what should remain intolerable. Yet the novel refuses nihilism. Its most moving counterforce lies in the ordinary human being—in the capacity to love, care, remember, wonder, and imagine otherwise. The protagonist’s gaze toward the stars becomes especially significant: a cosmic vision that exceeds the claustrophobia of the damaged city. Love emerges not merely as emotion but as an alternative social ontology, resisting the transactional logic through which dystopian societies reproduce themselves.
