The Productive Muslim suffers from a fundamental flaw: it reads exactly like any other book in the secular productivity genre, just with an exhausting "mashallah, inshallah" wrapper on top. It regurgitates well-known facts and standard corporate talking points, using the religion to instrumentalize those conclusions for a Muslim audience. The premise relies on questionable statistics about Muslim illiteracy, unemployment, and Nobel laureates. Lowest number of Nobel Prize winners habibi? A prize Westerners invented to award to their friends isn't impressing nor fooling anyone. All this is used to manufacture a crisis that this specific framework supposedly solves.

The text is what happens when modern self-help formatting bypasses traditional scholarly review. By his own admission, Faris is neither a sleep, nutrition, nor fitness expert. What he leaves out is that he is certainly not a theological one either, holding degrees in Social Sciences and Law from the University of Bristol. The irony here is staggering when you look at the book's layout. The section on "Physical Productivity", a field where he admits he has no expertise, spans an exhausting 75 pages. "Spiritual Productivity", where he commits glaring theological errors, drags on for 50 pages. Yet Chapter 5 on "Social Productivity", arguably the only area where his academic background makes him somewhat qualified to speak, is crammed into a mere 22 pages.

In truth, you can simply skim the headings and subheadings; you do not even need to read the actual paragraphs. The concepts are so painfully simple that reading directives like "build a structure," "declutter my desk," or "simplify my home" is entirely sufficient. There is no need to slog through a whole bunch of mediocre text just to watch him unnecessarily add his own uninformed flair. Even when he attempts to quote legitimate scholars like Ibn al-Qayyim, the translations and retelling of stories are often so shoddy that it becomes glaringly obvious he did not do his due diligence. Once you realize how careless the research is, it completely spoils the rest of the book.

The only thing Faris is theologically qualified to do is quote scholars. This book could have simply been a literature review of centuries-old Islamic knowledge, but one cannot build a corporate training brand around just presenting the work of others. Instead of relying on qualified authorities, he positions himself as an expert. Considering he grew up in Saudi Arabia, there is absolutely no shortage of scholars he could have hired to review the manuscript before publishing. Yet he chose not to, resulting in a sixth edition that is still packed with glaring errors that a trained Student of Knowledge would have easily caught:

Historical & Hadith Errors: The manuscript falsely claims Umar's milkmaid gave birth directly to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, skipping an entire generation. It butchers the hadith of Fatima (Bukhari 3705) by omitting "he sat down between us," making it sound like the Prophet stood on her chest. I showed this exact excerpt to three different people, and all three thought it meant he literally stood on her. For ten years, since the first edition in 2016, this book has carelessly misled readers about the Messenger ﷺ. The author also claims to have "personally witnessed" Ibn Taymiyya, who died 700 years prior, and claims Al-Fath ibn Khaqan carried a book in his "shoe," mistranslating the Abbasid scholar's use of a sleeve or long riding boot (khuff). Furthermore, it inverts the hadith on the believer's affairs (Muslim 2999) to claim they are "grateful" in hardship, when the Messenger ﷺ explicitly said they are "patient."
Theological Imprecision: The book flirts with anthropomorphism by describing Allah as a "single point." It wedges in an unsubstantiated Isra'iliyyat about a sleeping Moses dropping buckets, between Hadith and Qur'an and without warning the user. It claims Taqwa is developed in the "soul," ignoring that the Prophet pointed to his chest (Muslim 2564a) and that eventhe messenger, peace be upon him, refused to answer questions about the soul, which was a specific Jewish litmus test. It also misrepresents Tawakkul, treating Dua as a supplement to work, rather than work supplementing intention and Dua.
The Western Validation Complex: There is an exhausting need to validate Islamic principles through Western secular frameworks. The text constantly positions secular figures as ultimate authorities, quoting "best-selling author this" or "the father of integrative medicine that." It treats 1,400 years of Islamic tradition as if it needs a stamp of approval from a Time Magazine article. This leads to cringeworthy scientism, such as citing an anonymous anecdote that Muslims would have "gone to the moon in the 1400s" if not for "infighting."
Fabricated Frameworks: The book reuses Chris Bailey's Time/Energy/Attention formula and simply appends "Reward in the Hereafter." It introduces a "3 major spheres" doctrine complete with unnecessary, almost kabbalistic symbolism that adds absolutely nothing of value; Muslims have avoided such symbolism for over 1,400 years. It forces Salah into a comparison with Hindu meditation, confusing Islamic Tafakkur (contemplation) with Ta'ammul (meditation). By inventing terms like "Spiritual Productivity" and turning Barakah into a corporate flowchart, the text ignores that we currently live in the Era of Imitation and Finality (عصر التقليد والجمود) where inventing new religious frameworks cannot be done without innovation, which we have been strictly warned against.

I strongly urge the author to hire a qualified Student of Knowledge as soon as possible, issue a seventh edition, and pull the current stock from shelves. Every time the text claims a concept is "largely misunderstood," the author is either projecting his own ignorance or being deeply patronizing. He manufactures myths, like pretending most Muslims think Sadaqah is only about money, just to set up a strawman he can knock down while passing his own layman interpretations onto the reader. Ultimately, the underlying thesis implies that a Muslim who is slow, disabled, or economically unproductive is living a lesser version of Islam.

This highlights a broader issue: Muslims need to stop creating "beneficial Muslim content" and simply create "beneficial content." If the advice is truly rooted in the superior moral principles of Islam, it will appeal to everyone without needing to hide behind religious aesthetics. We do not need "Islamic productivity," "Islamic finance," or "Islamic psychology"; we need moral, robust versions of these disciplines. Slapping an "Islamic" label on a standard self-help framework is less about providing a genuinely Islamic methodology and more about marketing to a captive demographic.
