"I picked up If It Makes You Happy in the middle of summer and somehow ended up feeling homesick for autumn. This book was everywhere last year, and for some reason I kept putting it off. Now that I've finally read it? Yeah, I'm kicking myself a little.

It's currently summer, I'm already missing fall, and this book basically gave me autumn in book form. Every chapter felt like being wrapped in a blanket with hot apple cider while orange leaves fell outside. Julie Olivia absolutely nailed the atmosphere.

The story follows Michelle, a burned-out advertising executive whose life has fallen apart after a divorce and her mother's death. When she inherits her family's B&B in Copper Run, Vermont, she plans to renovate it, hand it over to her sister, and head straight back to Seattle.

Except... Cliff happens.

Cliff owns the local bakery, has two adorable daughters, and might be one of the biggest green flags I've ever encountered in a romance. Michelle is guarded, sarcastic, fiercely independent, and allergic to accepting help. Cliff is patient, warm, emotionally available, and never tries to "fix" her. Their black cat x golden retriever dynamic was perfection.

I loved how their friends-to-lovers romance developed through everyday moments rather than grand gestures. Their relationship felt built, not rushed.

I also unexpectedly loved the 1997 setting. No smartphones, no social media, no texting. People leave notes, call landlines, rent VHS tapes, and actually show up at each other's houses. I barely existed in the '90s, and somehow Julie Olivia still made me nostalgic for them.

Copper Run was just as charming as the romance itself. Between the bakery, the B&B, the festivals, the quirky townspeople, the crisp mornings, and the colorful autumn leaves, I wanted to move there immediately. Reading this book felt like taking a cozy vacation.

I also appreciated that Cliff being a single father wasn't treated as a shortcut to making him more attractive. His relationship with his daughters felt authentic and lived-in, and Michelle's bond with them developed naturally. Meanwhile, Michelle's journey of rebuilding the B&B while also rebuilding herself was my favorite part of the story.

My only complaint is that the middle drags a little. I definitely got impatient waiting for Thanksgiving when Michelle and Cliff finally sit down and talk. But I also appreciated how grounded the conflict felt. No ridiculous miscommunication, no manufactured breakups; just adults dealing with grief, family, responsibilities, and second chances.

And that epilogue from Rocket's POV?

STOP. The cutest possible way to end this book.

If you're looking for a cozy small-town romance filled with bakeries, fall festivals, found family, and two people slowly finding their way back to happiness, this one is absolutely worth picking up. As for me, I'll be spending the rest of summer wishing I lived in Copper Run."
