The writing in White Oleander is astonishingly good and much of the reason behind my rating. I can see how people consider it melodramatic, but personally I found it moving. The reason this wasn’t a complete hit for me was because it was just so dark and depressing. It felt hopeless at times, like nothing would ever go right by the end. This had my attention from page one, and having read plenty of books around Mormonism, I have to say, this one was unique. Wariner grew up in a Mormon polygamous community in Mexico.
