Göksu Afacan Ozturk

After completing her medical education at Marmara University in 2010, Göksu Afacan Ozturk received her Emergency Medicine Residency training at the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (ÇOMU). She worked at Başkent University, Biruni University, and Istanbul Aydın University, respectively. She is currently working as an assistant professor at Istanbul Aydın University and Acıbadem Health Group. Apart from her articles published in three international and four national journals, she has published a total of eight book chapters. She is a member of the European Society for Emergency Medicine (EUSEM), as well as several Turkish associations. In addition to her certificates in various fields, she gave training courses in multiple cities in Turkey and abroad (Egypt, 2018) on Advanced Cardiac Life Support and the use of ultrasound in the ED.

Abdominal Trauma

Abdominal injuries may be life threatening and should be approached cautiously. After trauma, the abdomen may be sanctuary for occult bleeding that, if not discovered and corrected expeditiously, may lead to deleterious consequences. Patients with abdominal trauma should have rapid assessment, stabilization, and early surgical consultation to maximize the chances of a successful outcome. Deaths from abdominal trauma result principally from hemorrhage or sepsis. Most deaths from abdominal trauma are preventable. Patients at risk of abdominal injury should undergo prompt and thorough evaluation. In some cases, dramatic physical findings may be due to abdominal wall injury in the absence of intraperitoneal injury. If the results of diagnostic studies are equivocal, diagnostic laparoscopy or exploratory laparotomy should be considered, since they may be lifesaving if serious injuries are identified early.

Bacterial Pneumonia in the Immunosuppressed Patient: An Update on Recognition and Management

Cellular and humoral immune impairments develop following a disruption in systemic defense, which can be primary or acquired. Infectious and non-infectious lung problems may develop in immunosuppressed patients (ISP). Pneumonia is frequently seen in patients whose local or systemic defense mechanisms are impaired for any reason. In addition to treating lung diseases, the correct management of comorbid and underlying diseases is essential in these patients. A thorough understanding of the importance of bacterial pneumonia in ISP will be valuable for the correct diagnosis and management. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative bacterial agent that causes nosocomial pneumonia and various infections in ISP, as well as in those with structural lung disease. Preventive measures, including vaccination practices against viruses and Streptococcal disease, impacted the morbidity and mortality. This chapter aimed to systematically summarize and review current data on the diagnosis and management of pneumonia and related processes in ISP.
