Bettina Beard
Tina Beard, Ph.D., began her career teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses and investigating human visual system plasticity. She then worked in the industry developing ophthalmological tests. In 1999, she shifted to government work serving in NASA management and as NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) Deputy Human Factors Technical Fellow, leading efforts to: define human-automation function allocation strategies for the U.S. Air Transportation System, develop airline ramp controller training, design integrated workstations for tower controllers, and develop a methodology for aircraft inspector vision standards. Human spaceflight-related projects included an evaluation of NASA's test facility and payload procedures, ISS Mission Control Center resilience, astronaut workload, cognitive abilities after simulated space ascent, and normative data on NASA's Cognition Test Battery for spaceflight applications. In 2024, Dr. Beard retired from NASA and as chair of the Human Performance and Health Technical Committee of the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS).
