Description

In Ben and Bob, young readers will learn words that follow the consonant-vowel-consonant pattern (CVC) as Ben and Bob discover they have similar interests and become friends. This book is set in the Philippines. Each book in the series contains a word list, high-frequency words, and background information on the country featured in the book.

The Let’s Read Decodable Books Collection, a foundational literacy program from the Asia Foundation published exclusively in the US by Bebop Books, offers a set of thirty engaging stories organized to progress readers through specific and sequential phonics skills. These books adhere to an original, evidence-based scope and sequence that starts with foundational letter-sound correspondence and progresses to more complex phonemic relationships.

Written with the youngest phonics learners in mind, the Let’s Read Decodable Books Collection ensures each sentence provides optimal decoding practice, while also infusing unique cultural elements and a global perspective rarely seen in phonics books. These books were created by talented authors and illustrators from seven countries: the Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Cambodia, and Pakistan. While individual stories can be purchased and read as a standalone title, the Let’s Read stories are most effective as a set, and the collection includes the books, lesson plans, scope and sequence, and additional prompts for caregivers.

About the Creators

Beverly R. Padilla

Beverly R. Padilla has been a first-grade teacher at the School of the Future in the Division of San Carlos City, Philippines, for eighteen years. She served as an editor and Learning Resource Evaluator for thirty-seven stories of the extensive ABC+ Project that created Sinubuanong Binisaya Leveled Readers. Her active engagement and efforts in the development of learning materials contributed to the success of that project. For her, storytelling at the beginning of each lesson is the most effective way to inspire children's interest during the early years of schooling.

Andie Gamboa

Andie Gamboa is a painter and illustrator based in the Philippines. Her work is an ode to her childhood growing up on the coasts of both New England and Negros Occidental (her hometown), where she developed an appreciation for the simplicity of everyday life. In watercolor, gouache, and mixed media, Andie illustrates scenes that explore the inner-child work of rediscovering culture as a child of the diaspora.
