Words mean nothing without action, so when we talk about the music business we all say we want to work in, we should work towards it too. Wes Davenport of °1824 - Universal Music Group, Eryka Hammonds of Universal Music Group Group, Kahala Farrow and Katie Holmes of The ROSTR Group are discussing what it takes to to build that community and shape culture with Lark42's Aileen Crowley here at #MusicBiz2026! 🧩

  • Whether you just walked across the stage or you’re preparing to in the future, here are three things our graduates wish they knew before the big day! ✍️ Your college experiences ARE real-world experiences. Take a college radio show for example. In your mind, this might seem like a run-of-the-mill experience, but don’t fool yourself into thinking that the knowledge you’ve gained in the process is anything but applicable to the real world. Whether you’re planning events, running social media accounts, or simply working with a team, you’re developing skills that will directly impact your future. You don’t have to be perfect to be qualified. It’s not uncommon to think that you should wait to capitalize on an opportunity until you “know everything,” or feel like it’s the “right moment” to. To that we say, seize the opportunity! Nobody is ever going to start out as an expert, that kind of growth comes from allowing yourself to learn new things along the way. Your future employers, mentors and coworkers are not looking for someone that has all the answers, they’re looking for someone who is curious, passionate, and dependable. You’re going to keep doing things for the first time. So, give yourself grace. Even though you may have finished your last “first days” of school, first internships, first interviews or even first jobs, that doesn’t mean your experience with “firsts” are over. This might feel daunting, but just think about how many “firsts” you’ve already overcome in order to get where you are today! Growth is not always linear. There will always be some kind of “first” ahead of you, and that is no different for anyone else. Nobody has it all mapped out yet, so the most important thing you can do is simply keep showing up.

  • Ever wondered what it takes to get hired at °1824? Well… here are three obscure traits that could help you get your foot in the door! 1. Being an avid social media scroller. If you find yourself scrolling through each and every one of your social media feeds when you have a moment of free time, you’re already on the right track. You can already tell when a post has that viral quality to it, when a meme format feels dated or when a sound is about to take off. It takes a keen eye to stay on top of the trends that seem to fade out just as soon as they burst into the spotlight. 2. Being the designated “aux friend.” If you’re the first person that gets handed the aux cord at the function, that’s a good sign. That means you always know the right songs to play for the setting you’re in. Knowing how to create a fitting soundtrack for a specific occasion isn’t always the easiest thing to master. It boils down to your ability to read the room, gauge the crowd’s interests and most importantly, catch a vibe! All of these things are essential in music marketing. 3. Being the biggest music enthusiast you know. Perhaps the most important trait out of all three, is simply being passionate about music. When you really care about something, it will undoubtedly show through the work you do. If you know all of the lore behind each era of an artist, if you feel emotionally tied to your favorite songs or if you feel that you’re a fan culture guru, then you’re in a great position. °1824 is always on the lookout for music lovers who are determined to make an impact on the industry that they hold so close. So, if any of these traits resonate with you, then tap in with us!

  • We sat down with °1824 - Universal Music Group Representative Raquel Hilton to discuss how balancing a senior year of college with a high-speed career at Universal Music Group has completely rewired her brain. She shared how the experience transformed her from a casual music fan into a strategic analyst of culture. Here are Raquel’s biggest takeaways from a year spent deep in the industry: The End of Passive Content Nothing is purely entertainment anymore because every viral video or trending sound is now a study in editing, engagement and strategic delivery. Deeper Artist Investigation Understanding an artist requires going far beyond the song by diving into lyrics and fan subcultures and the specific work ethic of a record label. Cutting Through the Noise Since college students are a busy target audience your content and events must be genuinely creative enough to be worth their limited time. Courage Over Intimidation Success comes from swallowing the lump in your throat and showing up for the scary meetings until they eventually become second nature. Your Unique Fingerprint Avoid the comparison trap and focus on the irreplaceable perspective you bring to a project rather than measuring yourself against others. Creativity is Renewable When you hit a wall you must trust that stepping back is a mechanical necessity for your brain to make the next big creative connection.
