6Green Project
Research Services
Realize an innovative service-based ecosystem to promote energy efficiency across the whole 5/6G value-chain.
About us
The 6Green project aims to conceive, design, and realize an innovative service-based and holistic ecosystem, able to extend “the communication infrastructure into a sustainable, interconnected, greener end-to-end intercompute system” and promote energy efficiency across the whole 5/6G value-chain. The ultimate objective is to enable and to foster 5/6G networks and vertical applications reducing their carbon footprint by a factor of 10 or more. To achieve this objective, the project will exploit and extend state-of-the-art cloud-native technologies and the B5G Service-Based Architecture with new cross-domain enablers. 6Green will provide stakeholders with flexible and green Artificial Intelligence mechanisms that will allow propagating the environment impact to any players acting on virtual domains, and triggering zero-touch operations according to customizable energy- and carbon-aware policies, allowing to optimally use renewable energy sources. The project will deliver three future-proof use-case applications that will provide a diverse awareness of the green capabilities of the 6Green platform.

Just a day to our workshop in EuCNC & 6G Summit, and I’m so pleased to announce the release of our technical report: “Sustainable 6G by Design: An SNS-Driven Vision for AI-Native, System-Level Sustainability.” This work explores how sustainability can be embedded by design into 6G systems — moving beyond isolated energy efficiency improvements toward a holistic, system-level approach spanning environmental, economic, and social dimensions. The report builds on insights from across the European SNS ecosystem and serves as a follow-up to the EuCNC 2025 Workshop on “Technology Enablers for Sustainable 6G Design,” continuing the discussion on how to make sustainability a core property of future networks. A further follow-up white paper will be released after our workshop tomorrow, EuCNC 2026 Workshop 11: “Sustainable by Design, Sustainable in Operation.” 👥 Authors and contributors to this very informative white paper for which I had the pleasure of serving as editor are the following group of distinguished experts: Chiara Lombardo (University of Genoa); Artur Hecker (Huawei); Rui Luís Aguiar (Instituto de Telecomunicações); Aseeva (Digital for Planet); Ayat Zaki Hindi (LIST); Akshay Jain (Nokia); Anastasius Gavras (Eurescom); Katrina Petersen (PSC Europe); Mays AL-Naday (University of Essex); @Eva Hajdok, Massimo Neri (Martel Innovate); Carlos J. Bernardos (UC3M); Lars Christoph Schmelz Schmelz (Nokia); Stefan Wendt (Orange); Sébastien Faye (LIST), Chiara Mazzone (SNS JU) 🤝 Contributing Projects SNS BeGREEN Project, 6Green Project, Project EXIGENCE, CENTRIC Project, SUSTAIN-6G Project, 6G-SANDBOX Project, 6G-TWIN, 6G-GOALS, DESIRE6G, Natwork Project, SUPERIOT, 6G-NTN, ORIGAMI Project, 5G-STARDUST, Hexa-X-II‑X II, 6G-VERSUS, TrialsNet, HORSE Project, 6G-EWOC 🌐 Contributing inputs from SNS Sustainability Task Force questionnaire and white paper. This technical report reflects a truly collaborative effort across projects and stakeholders, contributing to a shared vision of making sustainability measurable, actionable, and embedded into future 6G systems. 📄https://lnkd.in/erXkJgqC Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association #6G #Sustainability #SNS #EuCNC #FutureNetworks #GreenerICT #EnergyEfficiency #CarbonFootprint #ICT

NEW PAPER!! 🎉 Especially proud this time because a Master’s student has been involved in this achievement—an experience that makes it even more meaningful. April ’26 has truly been a terrific month! Find the paper here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eMwAujcv This time it’s not about data. Our paper, “A Framework to Incentivise Green Networks and Infrastructure in the 6G Mobile Ecosystem,” has been accepted for publication in Telecommunications Policy (https://lnkd.in/eVGAq_Cy), a leading Q1 multidisciplinary international journal in policy, regulation, and governance. While the ICT sector has not historically been considered a major contributor to environmental impact, carbon emissions from its infrastructures and services are increasing rapidly, driven by the sustained growth of end-user connected devices, the proliferation of large processing data centres, and the increasing digitalisation of the economy. Emission projections vary heavily, and it is uncertain whether it will be a net contributor or an obstacle to achieving European climate neutrality and environmental goals. The paper is timely, since sustainability is meant to be one of the key pillars of future 6G networks. I had the pleasure of co-authoring this work with Sergio Illescas, during his internship at GTIC (https://gtic.ssr.upm.es/), and Zoraida Frias. The paper builds on our earlier research presented at the 33rd International Telecommunications Society European Conference in Edinburgh. This research has been supported by the European Union’s HORIZON Europe 6Green Project, and the paper is available open access in the July ’26 issue of the journal.
