Today I replaced a competitor’s split mechanical seal on a large Sulzer split-case pump at a paper mill with a 140 mm A.W. Chesterton Company split mechanical seal. Key advantages of the Chesterton 442 include straightforward installation—especially since no O-ring gluing is required—fewer components compared to other brands, and a pressure rating of up to 200 psi. The ball-and-socket O-ring design also makes field installation much easier. The entire installation was completed in under 45 minutes. We recently fitted a newly refurbished pump with a split spiral trac adapter plate from EnviroSeal Engineering Products Ltd. This pump is equipped with a split 442 seal from A.W. Chesterton Company . The primary function of the spiral trac is to protect the seal from any solid or abrasive materials that the pump may draw in.
