Earlier today the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities voted to terminate the State Agreement Approach (SAA), a framework established to execute a statewide coordinated transmission upgrade strategy. The first of its kind in the nation, SAA would have hardened New Jersey’s energy transmission infrastructure to feed locally produced energy from offshore wind projects onto the grid and help alleviate our energy generation crisis. Recent actions by the Trump Administration to kill offshore wind projects forced BPU to take this action. With no generation projects available to take advantage of these transmission upgrades, BPU had no choice but to terminate the SAA in order to protect ratepayers from additional expense. ACECNJ member firms working on offshore wind generation and transmission projects understand better than anyone how badly these investments are needed to address our long-term energy needs. While today’s action is unfortunate and disappointing, BPU’s vote does not represent a turning away from offshore wind energy projects. New Jersey is in desperate need of new generation. Offshore wind is a significant component of a comprehensive all-of-the-above approach to energy generation and a necessity to meet our future energy goals.
