Thank you to everyone who joined us last Friday to celebrate the grand opening of BHN’s Fall River Abilities Learning Center! ✂️🎉 We were honored to welcome Mayor Paul Coogan and State Rep. Alan Silvia, whose support highlights the importance of expanding services for children and families in the community. “We’re proud to bring individualized services for children and youth with autism to Fall River,” said Matthew Matroni, Program Manager for Abilities Programs at BHN. “This center allows us to meet children where they are and support their growth in a structured, welcoming environment.” BHN’s Abilities programs offer personalized Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services to help children build communication, social, and daily living skills. Families can choose in-home support or center-based services in a thoughtfully designed space that includes learning areas, sensory rooms, and opportunities for peer interaction. In addition to the Fall River location, BHN offers Abilities programming in Springfield, and Worcester, expanding access to services for families across Massachusetts. Last week we came together to thank our generous sponsors and donors for helping us reach our $5 million goal for the Katherine B. Wilson Staff Excellence Fund and to celebrate Kathy Wilson’s lasting legacy. Named in honor of BHN’s founding CEO, the fund reflects Kathy’s belief in investing in people, strengthening communities, and supporting professional growth. The Staff Excellence Fund helps BHN staff pursue education, training, certifications, and leadership development opportunities that enhance their careers and strengthen the care we provide across our organization. As behavioral health needs continue to grow across Massachusetts, community‑centered care has never been more critical. At BHN, we’re responding by expanding services and building strong partnerships to meet evolving community needs. From launching Family‑based Intensive Treatment (FIT) for families in crisis to growing recovery, medication treatment, and child and family services statewide. “Meeting families where they are, with the right level of support at the right time, is essential,” says Michelle Michaelian, Senior Vice President of Child & Family Community‑Based Programs. “That’s how we build stronger, healthier communities.” Thank you to Healthcare News for elevating this important conversation, and to our teams and partners who make this work possible every day. Staff at BHN’s Holyoke Opioid Treatment Program recently celebrated Sandy Ortega’s retirement after more than 30 years of service as a clinician. Sandy’s compassion, consistency, and unique way of connecting with people have made a lasting impact on both the individuals we serve and the colleagues who worked alongside her. “As a clinician, I have been entrusted with something sacred: the confidence and vulnerability of others. To guide, support, and encourage people as they work to change and better their lives is an honor I have never taken lightly. In helping others grow, I too have grown. In witnessing their resilience, I have strengthened my own.” As she looks ahead, Sandy does so with gratitude, pride, and hope—excited for what’s next and committed, as always, to creating positive change. Congratulations, Sandy, on a well‑earned retirement. Thank you for everything you’ve given to the Holyoke OTP team and the community we serve!

Leadership matters. Leaders who inspire, support, and develop their teams build trust—and trust is what unlocks human potential and strengthens the experience of clients, families, and communities. At a time of uncertainty and austerity, BHN is affirming our commitment to service excellence, employee development and our HEART values (Humanity, Empowerment, Accountability, Respect & Teamwork). Over the past six months, we’ve invested in nearly 400 leaders through our Foundations of Leadership program, representing more than 15,600 hours of learning across in‑person training, virtual sessions, e‑courses, and focused work on recognizing and preventing microaggressions. This effort reflects powerful cross‑department collaboration, a deep commitment to our people and communities, and an investment that is already showing up in meaningful ways: “Since the training, I’ve noticed a shift in how I show up. I’m working harder to speak up and address things in the moment instead of letting them slide, while also being a stronger advocate for the staff I work with. It feels like more of a balance between holding expectations and helping people meet their own professional goals. On a personal level, the leadership series helped ground me during a time of change in my role at BHN. It gave me a clearer sense of how I want to lead.” — Clinical Supervisor Thank you to the team members who made these trainings possible and to our BHN leaders who participated and do the hard work of leadership every day.
