BKSK was proud to sponsor this year’s Jane's Walk NYC 2026, leading two tours centered around the theme “New Skins, Old Stories.” The first walk explored The Village West, BKSK’s newly completed multifamily residential building on the northern edge of the West Village. Located at the evolving intersection of 14th Street and Sixth Avenue, the project occupies the third of four corners to be redeveloped over the past decade. Its design draws from the surrounding neighborhood—referencing nearby forms, textures, and materiality—to create a layered architectural language that feels both contemporary and contextual. The second walk focused on two BKSK projects surrounding Union Square Park. The tour began at 44 Union Square, the reimagined Tammany Hall building, now home to a flagship Petco store. From there, the group visited The Twenty Two New York, the first U.S. outpost of the London-based boutique hotel and social club, housed within a transformed former Ladies’ Mile dormitory building. It was a pleasure guiding participants through these evolving parts of the city and sharing the stories behind each project. A huge thank you to The Municipal Art Society of New York, our co-sponsors and everyone who joined us! Founded in 1985, BKSK is a NYC-based firm specializing in socially, contextually and ecologically engage design.
About us
Established in 1985, BKSK is a 4-partner, 40-person design firm based in New York City. As architects and scholars of the environment, both built and natural, we believe that great design has meaning and consequence. What we build, how we build it, and how it is used, matters. We create meaningful, thoughtful, and beautiful works of architecture. We are specialists in socially engaging, contextually appropriate, and environmentally conscious design. We have developed our expertise by truly listening to, and learning from, our clients, the community, and each other. Our projects include cultural, community, and educational institutions. Our practice has taught us that in the civic realm, we play an important role—not only as an architect but as an advocate for the building initiative. We work closely with institutions to articulate the importance of the project within the community, to donors, and to public agencies.

We’re thrilled to share that The Twenty Two New York has been named a Finalist in the Architizer A+Awards for Commercial Adaptive Reuse. This transformation of 16 East 16th Street reimagines an 1891 YWCA dormitory designed by R. H. Robertson as a nine-story, 80,000-square-foot boutique hotel and private club in Union Square. The project balances preservation with contemporary design, featuring a reconstructed sandstone ground floor and a reinterpretation of Robertson’s unbuilt upper story through a glass curtain wall screened by ultra-high-performance concrete. Public voting is now open, and you can vote once per day through May 15. To Vote: https://lnkd.in/evQcvaTG

We’ve been touched to hear recollections and memories from former campers, afterschool participants and neighbors as we present the design of the new Goodhue Center to the community. This project for Children's Aid, will continue the legacy of afterschool programs and summer camp activities that have served generations of Staten Islanders, since 1912. Designed to highlight the natural features of the site, the building will support the mission of the Goodhue Center - to provide hands on experiences that build confidence and connection. Last week we visited the The Morgan Library & Museum for a panel hosted by the The New York Landmarks Conservancy: “Is Preservation Hindering Housing Creation in New York?” The conversation brought together voices from across the field to explore a central question: can preservation help solve the housing crisis? The Conservancy says yes. The panel included Gale A. Brewer, Donovan Rypkema, Alexander Gorlin, Margery Perlmutter, R.A., Esq., Maggie Poxon, and Peg Breen. Thank you all for such a lively discussion!
