This May, we're celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month at DSH! Even as we encourage one another to look after our own mental health, we recognize the stigma those living with mental health conditions often face. Here at DSH, we're so grateful for the hard work of our team members in providing care, treatment, and support, and we recognize all the patients we serve across our continuum of care. Happy Mental Health Awareness Month! #mentalhealthawareness

🔎New Publication Alert We’re excited to share that Biomonitoring California has published a study in Frontiers in Public Health! The pilot study identifies chemical exposures to toxic air pollutants in a group of schoolchildren who live in a predominantly Hispanic/Latino community that is heavily impacted by air pollution. Key Findings: - Levels of naphthalene metabolites were especially high at nearly three times that of the general US population. - In all participants, we found evidence of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Why this matters: Naphthalene is a common toxic air pollutant that can cause cancer and other negative health effects. These findings highlight the need for further research to investigate novel exposure sources of naphthalene, especially in children who are more likely to be affected by naphthalene’s toxic effects. These data are critical for: - Protecting public health, especially for those who may be more susceptible to toxic effects - Empowering communities with knowledge about exposures in their environment - Informing exposure reduction strategies This study was made possible by the Stockton Air Pollution Exposure Project (SAPEP). Dr. Erica Pan is answering some of the most common questions we’re hearing about Andes hantavirus, and here’s the bottom line: ✔️ This is not the next pandemic. ✔️ Unlike COVID‑19, Andes hantavirus very rarely spreads from person to person. ✔️ Past outbreaks have shown that transmission typically requires very close, prolonged contact. Public health teams at CDPH, CDC, and local health departments are actively monitoring the four Californians who were exposed on a cruise ship and a flight. They are not in quarantine, but they are receiving daily health checks, symptom monitoring, and medical guidance to ensure their safety and the safety of those around them. For the vast majority of Californians, no action is needed. Your risk remains extremely low. CDPH is in close contact with CDC and the WHO. This is an evolving situation, and information is current as of May 13. New or changing information will be updated as it becomes available. CDPH Provides Update on Andes Hantavirus and California Residents Today, Dr. Erica Pan hosted a media briefing to share the latest information on the Andes hantavirus situation connected to a recent cruise ship outbreak. Here is what Californians need to know: California residents are being monitored and are currently well. CDPH is aware of four California residents who have been exposed to Andes hantavirus. All four are currently asymptomatic. Two have returned to California and are being monitored by their local health departments. Two are at federal facilities in Nebraska undergoing health assessments. The risk to the general public remains extremely low. Andes hantavirus is not known to spread easily from person to person. Transmission has historically required close, prolonged contact with a person who is actively ill. This is a key distinction from respiratory viruses like COVID-19. There is no treatment for hantavirus, which is why monitoring matters. There are no antivirals and no post-exposure prophylaxis available. Supportive care is the standard of care, making early detection and symptom monitoring critical. Exposed individuals in California are undergoing daily temperature checks and symptom assessments for a 42-day monitoring period. CDPH is coordinating at every level. Our team has been in close coordination with the CDC, local public health departments, healthcare providers, and transport partners in the relevant communities. We have also issued updated health advisories to California hospitals and healthcare providers to ensure they are prepared with appropriate infection control protocols. How Hantavirus is different from Covid-19: Dr. Pan was direct in addressing this question. Andes hantavirus requires very different, close-contact conditions for transmission. It is not airborne in the way COVID is. While this cruise ship outbreak is unusual and is being closely studied, the conditions on a small, close-quarters vessel are not representative of typical community spread. CDPH will continue to provide updates as this dynamic situation evolves. For the most current information, visit cdph.ca.gov. #WeArePublicHealth #Hantavirus #HealthyCA4All
