Tom McCarthy Conquers the Alcatraz Swim! On August 3, 2025, Carrollwood Country Club member Tom McCarthy (pictured on left) completed the legendary swim from Alcatraz Island to the San Francisco shoreline, finishing near the St. Francis Yacht Club. Tom finished the grueling 1.5-mile open water swim in 56 minutes and 15 seconds—an impressive time given the strong cross currents, 55-degree water, and the presence of leopard sharks, soup-fin sharks, jellyfish, and spiny dogfish. Tom was supported by his niece, Clara Reynolds, a former CCC member, respected distance swimmer, and CEO of the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. Clara, with her wealth of open water experience, served as Tom’s “swimming sherpa” for this unforgettable challenge. Fun Fact: The swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco is about 1.5 miles, but most swimmers record closer to 1.7–1.9 miles due to tidal drift. Finish times typically range from 45 to 70 minutes, depending on pace and conditions. Congratulations, Tom!
