At Cedars-Sinai’s 24th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration, we asked attendees and esteemed guests to reflect on how Dr. King’s teachings and wisdom show up in their lives. Their words are a powerful reminder that service, compassion, and community can lead our work every day. Thank you to everyone who joined us in honoring his legacy and continuing it through action.

Cedars-Sinai is partnering with Exobiosphere to advance biomedical research in space and on Earth. Using automated research hardware, investigators will send organoid experiments to Haven-1, the world’s first commercial space station developed by Vast. By studying how the weakened gravitational pull in space affects organoid growth, researchers aim to accelerate biomedical discovery. These discoveries could help inform treatments for conditions astronauts experience, including muscle loss, bone weakening and heart disease. New research from Cedars-Sinai highlights the immediate health impact of the January 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles. The study found significant increases in emergency department visits within 90 days of the fires, including a 46 percent rise in heart attacks, a 24 percent increase in pulmonary illness and more than double the rate of visits for general illness compared to prior years. “Wildfires that spread into urban areas have proven to be extremely dangerous because of how quickly they move and what they burn and release into the environment,” said Susan Cheng, vice chair of Research Affairs in the Department of Cardiology in the Smidt Heart Institute. Thursdays are simply magical at Cedars-Sinai. That’s when volunteer Patrick Heitkam visits patients at Guerin Children’s, using magic tricks to bring joy and laughter during hospital stays. “When you're in the hospital, it can get very boring for kids, especially when a patient is here for many days. Having Patrick come in and do some magic tricks is a very nice distraction, and patients love it. They ask, ‘Is he coming back again today?’” – Maureen Chin, MSN, RN Learn how a little magic’s been good medicine for Cedars-Sinai patients here: https://ceda.rs/4p2JX3Q
