"Before a client ever walks through my door, they are likely carrying some history of trauma." In the New York Law Journal, defense lawyer H. Ernest Stone argues there's a better way to support clients and create better outcomes. Referencing our national blueprint for trauma-informed practices in criminal courts, Stone lays out four strategies criminal defense attorneys can use to promote safety for clients with a history of trauma. https://lnkd.in/eMSthJyH

The New Yorker has published a profile of New York City Department of Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards at a critical moment for Rikers Island and the future of NYC’s jail system. Before becoming Commissioner, Richards spent decades leading The Fortune Society, advancing reentry, alternatives to incarceration, and dignity for people impacted by the system. Fortune Society has long been a valued partner to Osborne. Read the piece here: https://lnkd.in/gn6QRNMq

Five boroughs, one future, and THIRTY years of innovation! 🎉 Community justice takes many hands, and many years of sustained, committed work. Last night, we brought together a collection of innovators who make this work possible to recognize thirty years of the Center for Justice Innovation at the Center for Brooklyn History. From our origins in Midtown Manhattan as the first community court, to our newest initiatives like a mobile harm reduction van in the Bronx, guests were guided through decades of justice innovation and joined us to envision what's next. Spoiler alert: it's more ways of sowing the seeds of community justice - stay tuned for more next week! We were honored to be joined by New York State Unified Court System Chief Judge Rowan D. Wilson, who was recognized for being a community justice champion. Here's to thirty more years of building safety and justice for everyone! Thank you to our sponsors and supporters: • Presenting: Susan Hagedorn, RN, PhD • Visionary: Gregory and Jill Steinberg, Hecker Fink LLP, Latham & Watkins, OPEN Impact Real Estate. • Innovators: Adam Durrett, Capital One, Cigna Healthcare, Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, GFP Real Estate, HUB International, Quent Capital, Times Square Alliance.

What can New York City’s pedicab problem can teach us about delivering justice in today’s world? 🚲 Half bicycle, half carriage, pedicabs carry amused families and camera-wielding tourists across the park and around Midtown, often blasting classics like “Empire State of Mind” from speakers. And they’ve been causing a stir. From pricing fraud to loud music to unlicensed vehicles, complaints about pedicabs have piled up. Our new roadmap to reform works to change that, proposing concrete steps for reforming the city’s pedicab industry and guaranteeing a safe, fair experience for everyone involved. It’s the result of a roundtable that brought together industry representatives, justice system leaders, and others to map out a path forward. In many ways, the pedicab issue illustrates the broader problems of delivering justice in a fast-paced, complex environment like New York City. "Women’s Court does not dispense with accountability, but it seeks out the ways that systems may have failed these women. Then one by one, it tries to address those failings." For The New York Times, Rachel Louise Snyder brings us through the journey of the country's first-ever Women's Court in Hawaii, learning how the holistic approach keeps women out of prison and keeps families and communities together for a better future. https://lnkd.in/gFwhRJNR

Women's pathways into the justice system largely differ from those of men, often driven by what CCJ Policy Director Stephanie C. Kennedy, PhD, MSW described to Rachel Louise Snyder for The New York Times as "crimes of survival." Can Hawaii's first-of-its-kind Women's Court set an example for courts nationwide? https://lnkd.in/gFwhRJNR The Council's Women's Justice Commission is working to raise awareness of the unique challenges facing women in the justice system while building consensus for evidence-based reforms that enhance safety, health, and justice.
