A local hotspot for small businesses and entrepreneurs in East Charlotte is transforming into something more — a Business Opportunity Hub. Thanks to the Charlotte Latin American Chamber of Commerce and the city's Corridors of Opportunity program, Spark Centro will now provide vital resources to support emerging local retailers, entrepreneurs and job seekers in the Albemarle/Central Corridor. "Initiatives like the Business Opportunity Hub are vital to the well-being of Charlotte’s communities," said Mayor Vi Lyles when the City of Charlotte awarded six grants back in November 2023. "We strive to connect people to the resources they need to thrive." Today, that connection grew even stronger as Spark Centro broke ground on its new facility. A basic painting class changed Umayal Annamalai's life a few years ago. Through that class, Umayal decided to go all in and become a full time artist. Since then she's expanded her reach, hosting creative art workshops across Charlotte thanks to a Creative Growth Grant from the City of Charlotte. The City's Charlotte Business INClusion and Mecklenburg County's Office of Economic Development’s Business Diversity and Inclusion division teamed up once again this year to celebrate the remarkable businesses in our area. In its 15th year, the Crowns of Enterprise Awards honored several small, local businesses for their hard work and economic impact in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. In partnership with DreamKey Partners, Roof Above and the City of Charlotte, Caldwell Presbyterian Church converted its old education building into faith-based affordable housing.
