As part of the Health Department's response to xylazine-associated wounds, the Division of Substance Use Prevention and Harm Reduction (SUPHR) successfully applied to expand clinical diagnostic codes (i.e., ICD-10 codes) to accurately document and diagnose xylazine-associated wounds. These codes went live in October 2025. To promote the implementation of these new diagnostic codes, SUPHR collaborated with the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services to develop guidance, published today in Health Affairs Forefront. The publication includes an interactive figure to help providers accurately document and diagnose xylazine-associated wounds. Better clinical documentation can help public health surveillance and sustain wound care services, but only if it is used. Dedicated to serving the public’s health in Philadelphia
About us
Our Mission The mission of the Department of Public Health is to protect the health of all Philadelphians and to promote an environment that allows us to lead healthy lives. We provide services, set policies, and enforce laws that support the dignity of every man, woman and child in Philadelphia. Public Health in Philadelphia The history of public health in Philadelphia reaches back to the city's beginnings. William Penn's "greene countrie towne" was the first American city to provide free hospital care for its poorest residents at the Philadelphia Almshouse, built in 1732. Our city is home to the nation’s first medical school, children's hospital, cancer hospital, eye hospital, nursing school and dental school. Our Services The Philadelphia Department of Public Health is organized by divisions. Each division is responsible for providing services related to its name. Some services are provided by more than one division. Our Partners We are proud to support a broad network of community, hospital, academic and business partners throughout Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley. We work together to make Philadelphia a healthy place to live, work and play.

🚶🏾♀️ At its core, We Walk PHL is simple: people coming together to walk. But as We Walk Leader Fiona McCoy shares, it’s also about so much more: social connection, wellness, and discovering the parks and trails right in your own neighborhood. Through weekly guided group walks at 29 park locations across Philadelphia, We Walk PHL creates space for people to move their bodies, meet new neighbors, reconnect with nature, and support one another along the way 💚 From longtime friends reconnecting decades later to walkers encouraging each other through injuries and life changes, Fiona’s story is a reminder that something as simple as a walk can have a lasting impact. We Walk PHL is a partnership between Fairmount Park Conservancy, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, City of Philadelphia – Department of Public Health, and Get Healthy Philly. Ready to take the next step? The We Walk PHL spring season runs through June 30. Every year, the PDPH Division of Substance Use Prevention and Harm Reduction (SUPHR) analyzes data about every overdose death that happens in Philadelphia - including the demographics of individuals who died by overdose, where they lived, and the substances involved. The data, which comes from the PDPH Medical Examiner’s Office, gives insight into the substance use landscape in the City and informs how the City and community-based organizations respond.
