Through works like The Civil War, Baseball, and most recently The American Revolution, Ken Burns has spent five decades shaping how Americans see their history and themselves. At the center of all of it is a question he has never stopped asking, and never answered. Who are we? In the latest episode of Grey Matter, Consello's Declan Kelly sits down with Burns to explore how a life built on solitude, discipline, and uncompromising standards shapes his approach to storytelling, and what it means to spend a career in pursuit of a truth you know you will never fully reach. Burns also explains why he pushes back on what he calls the narcissism of the present, the instinct to see our moment as uniquely fractured. As he reflected during the conversation, "When we say this is the worst time, I go, the Revolution was more divisive. The Reconstruction, horrible time. World War Two, the greatest cataclysm on earth. A study of the past just gives you perspective." "One person's belief can alter the course of someone else's future." Congratulations to Mindy Grossman, our Vice Chair, on this well-earned recognition from Fashion Group International, Inc., and on a career defined by making that belief actionable.
A lifetime is a strange thing to reflect on. Some days it feels expansive. On others, it feels impossibly brief. When I accepted Fashion Group International, Inc. Lifetime Achievement Award last week, I found myself thinking less about the word achievement and more about the forces that shaped my life long before I ever had a senior title or a platform. I can trace so much of my drive back to the very beginning. I was adopted by two people who desperately wanted a child. For years, that dream felt out of reach. Then one day, while my father was at work, the owner handed him an envelope with a check inside and said, “Donald, I can’t watch you suffer another day. Please use this to adopt a child.” That act of generosity changed my parents’ lives. And it gave me mine. It also left me with an understanding that one person’s belief can alter the course of someone else’s future. That idea has stayed with me all my life. It shaped how I think about leadership and the responsibility that comes with it. I have always believed that success is measured by what we make possible for other people. I have been fortunate to work alongside extraordinary people and to learn from leaders who understood the value of helping others move forward. That shaped me as much as any role ever did. So after reflecting on this honor over the past week, I keep coming back to the people still finding their voice, still building their confidence, still wondering whether there is room for them, whether their ideas matter, whether they will get their chance. They will. And to anyone on that journey, my advice is this: lead with passion, but also with purpose. Work hard, but do not lose your humanity. Make room for ambition, but make even more room for generosity. The people who leave the deepest mark are the ones who help others rise. I’m deeply grateful to FGI for this recognition, and to my family, friends, and colleagues who have been part of the journey. In the end, what stays with us is not only what we build, but what we make possible for someone else. That is a journey I’m proud to still be on. ___________________________________________ A special thanks to Fashion Group International, Inc., Maryanne Grisz, Nancy Berger, Alyce Panico, Jeffrey Banks, Ron Chereskin Studio, Willi Smith, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Philip Knight, Barry Diller, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Rubin, & Declan Kelly

What a moment! Consello partner Shane Lowry aces No. 6 at The Masters. A brilliant hole-in-one and still plenty to play for. Keep it up, Shane! https://lnkd.in/edUfV3Mc

Tony James has spent over four decades making decisions that looked unconventional at the time and prescient in hindsight. At DLJ, he turned down Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley out of school and built a leveraged buyout and private capital platform that the rest of Wall Street spent the next four decades copying. As COO of Blackstone, he helped transform a firm with $20 billion in assets under management into one approaching a trillion by constructing a new set of investment businesses. At Costco, he helped build a company that has thrived by putting its members and employees ahead of everything else. As James reflected during the conversation, "We were trying to compete against giants. Giants that had been in business since the '30s. The challenge was how do we find a way to win? We had less of everything than everyone else." In the latest episode of Grey Matter, Consello Founder, Chairman and CEO Declan Kelly sits down with James to discuss what it means to build a career on seeing what others haven't yet, and what four decades of making unconventional calls ultimately teaches about judgment, patience, and knowing when to act. At Consello, we advise leaders navigating complexity and transformation. For Women's History Month, we brought that same lens inward. Across our New York, London, Belfast, and Dublin offices we hosted a leadership conversation focused on how leaders operate in practice through discipline and the ability to navigate complexity with clarity. Panelists shared reflections on moments when their judgment was tested, how they built influence in high-stakes environments, and how they manage the constant tension between immediate demands and long-term impact. Thank you to our panelists Wendy Clark, Janey Whiteside, Mindy Grossman, Sue Gray and Katie Doran for their candor and for sharing their experiences and to Stephanie Perez, MBA, PHR (she/her), for moderating this meaningful discussion.

Brian Moynihan became CEO of Bank of America on January 1, 2010, stepping into one of the most consequential moments in modern banking history. What followed was fifteen years of sustained transformation as Moynihan guided the bank through the fallout of the financial crisis, a sweeping digital revolution, and a period of growth that cemented its place as one of the most respected financial institutions in the world. As Moynihan reflected during the conversation, "When that mantle of leadership drops on your shoulder, you have this 200 plus year old institution that carries in its hands the lives of so many people. That's really a weighty matter. On the other hand, you have a talented team, and you say, let's get to work and let's be pragmatic." In the latest episode of Grey Matter, Consello Founder, Chairman and CEO Declan Kelly sits down with Moynihan for one of the most compelling leadership stories in modern banking, and what it takes to remain steady at the helm when the pressure on an institution is at its greatest.
