Jimmy Dunne believes pressure is something to use, not manage. In a recent episode of Grey Matter, Dunne reflects on why pressure has always been his greatest advantage. By his own assessment, in a purely academic environment, he wouldn’t expect to finish near the top. But when the stakes rise and the tension becomes overwhelming, that’s where he believes his grit and perseverance take over. Dunne has long held the conviction that the more difficult the situation, the greater his edge becomes. Playing from behind has never felt like a disadvantage to him; it’s where he’s most focused, resilient, and effective. That mindset shaped not only how he approached his career, but why he was unusually prepared to lead through moments like the aftermath of 9/11. In times when others break under pressure, Dunne believes adversity reveals where true talent lies. In an era where uncertainty has become certain, how marketers respond can make all the difference between stagnation and growth. In "From Volatility to Velocity: Delivering Marketing-Led Growth in Uncertain Times," Consello Managing Director Mark Mulhern outlines how marketing must evolve from a reactive cost center into a strategic engine for growth. As conditions shift and expectations rise, the brands that succeed align marketing strategy with enterprise goals, prioritize the messages that move markets, and invest with purpose to drive momentum. Mulhern illustrates that the real competitive advantage in volatility comes from converting change into intentional motion, or what he calls velocity: speed grounded in direction, clarity, and relevance. When people talk about ambition, it’s often framed as an all-costs pursuit. In a recent episode of Grey Matter, Jimmy Dunne, Vice Chairman and Senior Managing Principal of Piper Sandler, shares his perspective on what he calls refined desperation: the drive to succeed without believing you have to burn someone else to get there. That mindset was shaped early on by his parents who taught him to never look up or down at someone, but see people eye to eye. Never seeing himself as far ahead of anyone – and in fact preferring the role of perennial underdog – has served him well. Whether it's supporting his people and rebuilding his company after 9/11 or testifying in front of Congress about the future of golf, that mindset has kept him grounded, open, and focused on building trust over time. In an industry where urgency can turn into aggression, that sense of humility has proven to be a defining strength. When Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Air Lines, faces a tough decision, he doesn't follow the consensus opinion. In a recent episode of Grey Matter, Bastian reflects on making contrarian decisions in one of the most volatile industries, and whether he always knows they’re contrarian in the moment. But his approach is simple: he listens. As his mom taught him, "You have two ears and one mouth; use them in that proportion." For Bastian, real leadership starts with hearing different perspectives before deciding the path forward. Following the pack was never going to save Delta. Standing up for who you are and why you’re in the seat, and then backing those beliefs with action, is what truly matters. For nearly 140 years, The Coca-Cola Company built one of the most enduring brands in the world by pairing heritage, emotion and a secret recipe, guided by leaders who continuously expanded the portfolio. When James Quincey stepped into the role of Chairman and CEO, the context around the business was changing. Consumer preferences were evolving, digital platforms were reshaping how brands engaged with the world, and existing operating models and leadership philosophies that had served the company well were being tested by new realities. Quincey arrived with a mindset grounded in engineering and systems thinking, applying that discipline to help the company evolve into a total beverage company and remain resilient as conditions around the business changed. As Quincey reflected during the conversation, “Most things that were created made sense when they were created. They may have still been good for a different time, but they were not what we needed going forward. The hard part isn’t knowing that. Everyone knew it was true. The hard part is deciding to change it and then having the courage to actually do it.” In the latest episode of Grey Matter, Consello Founder, Chairman and CEO Declan Kelly sits down with Quincey to explore what it means to steward a global icon through change, and how leaders can adapt their approach while staying anchored to what has allowed an institution to endure. When leaders talk about culture, many point to values on a wall. Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Air Lines, points to his people. In this recent episode of Grey Matter, Bastian shares why he spends so much time on the ground listening, learning, and showing up for his employees, because he knows loyalty is built from the inside out. While many companies put customers at the center of every decision, Ed believes if you want 200 million customer interactions a year to be exceptional, start by investing in the people who make them possible. “CleanBoss is a category innovator with a proven ability to deliver products that combine efficacy, safety, and sustainability.” That was how Consello Capital’s Managing Partner Peter Morrow described our investment in CleanBoss Inc., a company bringing non-toxic, high-efficacy cleaning solutions to a category where performance and safety are typically a tradeoff. CleanBoss has built meaningful traction by meeting rising demand for products that are powerful, credible, and better for the home and workplace. For Consello Capital, this investment reflects our broader approach: supporting companies with strong fundamentals, clear consumer relevance, and the discipline to scale with purpose. CleanBoss represents that combination and is well positioned for its next stage of growth.
