What if your lights changed color with your brain activity? Giovani Florek built Emotiv Brain Light to find out. It connects an Emotiv headset to a Yeelight or LIFX smart bulb, with two modes: Performance Metrics: the color follows whichever metric is strongest right now, like engagement, attention or stress. Mental Commands: train a command and switch the light yourself. He's wearing an Insight here, and it also works with EPOC X. Free and open source. Our Halloween sale is extended until Oct 31: 10% off storewide, applied at checkout. A response time tells you how fast someone reacted. It says nothing about what happened in the brain before the button was pressed. Event-related potentials fill that gap. Play the same sound or show the same word many times. Line the EEG up at the exact moment each one appears and average the recordings. A consistent response comes out of the background activity, timed to the millisecond. That timing is the whole point, and it is also the risk. If the event markers drift by a few milliseconds, the average blurs and small responses disappear. Independent studies in PeerJ have tested Emotiv EEG for exactly this. They cover auditory ERPs (Badcock et al., 2013), EPOC Flex Saline (Williams et al., 2020) and event-marking accuracy (Williams et al., 2021). EPOC X PRO: built for long sessions and large participant groups. Dry by default, so there is no saline to prepare between participants. Comb sensors reach through hair, flat sensors sit on bare skin, and you can mix them site by site. The session is saved on the headset itself. Sixteen channels: every Epoc X site, plus P3 and P4 at the back of the head. 33% off EPOC X PRO pre-orders until Nov. 30. EPOC X PRO is open for pre-order: https://lnkd.in/e7AKn-e8

Most AI has learned from what people write. Very little has learned from what the brain does. At the Meta Open Source AI for Science Summit, we brought that gap to the table. Visitors wore an EPOC X, saw their EEG live, and explored EEG-X alongside its performance across six NeuralBench task categories. "What I enjoyed most was the chance to present our work through a live 'thought-to-word' spelling demo and show how an EEG foundation model can be showcased in a real-time setting," says Jiazhen Hong. "Talking directly with researchers gave me a lot of new insights into how EEG models can connect with other neural modalities, as well as their potential for everyday and clinical applications." Dcode AI is building API access to these EEG foundation models, so teams can build on brain data without starting from zero. Grateful to Meta and to everyone who came by to talk open science and the brain. #AIforScience #EEG #Neuroscience

Two students can get the same quiz score after two very different lessons. One stayed engaged from the first minute to the last. The other started strong and lost focus once the task got harder. The quiz gives both of them the same number. It cannot say where in the lesson the difference opened up. EEG records attention continuously while the lesson runs, in a real classroom rather than a lab. A change of pace, a harder task or a noisy room all leave a mark in the recording at the moment it happens. Which means you can look at the stretch of the lesson where attention slipped, not only at the grade it produced. Skip a song without lifting a finger. Our own Giovani Florek built Emotiv Mind Music, a free app that hooks an Emotiv headset up to Spotify. He trained two mental commands on his EPOC X: one plays or pauses, the other skips to the next track. Works with Insight and EPOC X. Open source, runs right on your computer, Spotify Premium required. Our Halloween sale is extended: 10% off storewide until Oct 31, applied at checkout. emotiv.dev is live: brain-computer interface experiences that run in your browser, built for your own Emotiv headset. There are seven to start. NEUROFLIGHT lets you steer a ship with head motion, then fly it on a mental command you train in Mind Move. Orbit Runner and Motion Viewer run on head motion alone. Raw EEG shows every channel your headset sends, in microvolts. Building with the Cortex API? emotiv.dev/learn explains how it works in five minutes, from the first connection to training a command. Full access runs on EmotivIQ and Emotiv Cloud, with your consent. Try the experiences: https://lnkd.in/edw9qUEc

The same lesson costs more mental effort in one room than in another, and the exam scores will not show it. Classroom layout, a virtual lesson, a group activity and a lecture all place different demands on the people in the room. Course results rank the outcomes. They say nothing about how much effort the room demanded while the lesson was running. EEG records attention and cognitive load continuously, in an actual classroom rather than a lab. Run the same lesson in two rooms and the difference shows up in the recording. Which means the design of a learning space becomes something you can measure instead of argue about. EEG preprocessing cleans a recording, and it cannot rescue one that was collected badly. That distinction decides how much of a study anyone can trust. A raw recording holds eye blinks, jaw movement, mains hum and slow drift on top of the brain activity you meant to collect. Filtering, ICA and epoching separate those out. None of them can put back a signal that was never recorded cleanly. Preprocessing is a protocol, not a repair shop. Write the pipeline down before analysis begins, then run it the same way on every participant. Choosing filter settings after you have seen the results is how bias walks quietly into a study.
