⚓🌱 From Ports to Green Corridors: advancing energy transition in the Baltic Sea Region Last week in Hamburg, the workshop “From Ports to Green Corridors: Energy Transition and Decarbonisation in Transport” brought together PA Energy, PA Ship, PA Safe and PA Transport coordinators to exchange best practices and forward‑looking strategies. The discussions focused on the role of ports in the energy transition, energy security, and sustainable transport, drawing on the strong expertise and practical experience of Hamburg stakeholders. Hamburg’s long history as one of Europe’s leading ports shows how continuous adaptation can drive transformation, a lesson that is highly relevant for today’s transition towards climate‑neutral transport and energy systems. For the Baltic Sea Region, this work goes beyond decarbonisation. Shipping-related oil and HNS spills pose a severe threat to the fragile #BalticSea. PA Safe was proud of this energetic seminar from 3 of "our" projects, where the buzz during coffee breaks was humming all day. Also happy and proud to support the event with some moderation from Ulf Siwe. PA Safe are thinking about how to build a partnership for the upcoming #UnderKeelClearance services using the S-129 standard from International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) based on the data in the Baltic Sea harmonised by Baltic Sea e-Nav project. The #EUSBSR is also keen to get regional security projects going where the #R_Mode solutions from the #ORMOBASS project will fit in.
We at Baltic Sea e-Nav are proud to have co-organised the Smart Maritime Future in the Baltic Sea Region joint project seminar, which took place on 3 December in Copenhagen together with our sister projects ORMOBASS and MaDaMe. All three initiatives are all under the Interreg Baltic Sea Region programme, whose support plays a crucial role in enabling cross-border cooperation and accelerating innovation in maritime digitalisation. For Baltic Sea e-Nav, the event was an important platform to present our work on advancing S-100–based navigation services. As part of this, we also showcased our ECDIS demo, which participants were able to explore hands-on. The day was filled with insightful presentations, demonstrations, and discussions that highlighted both the progress made in our projects and the challenges that still lie ahead. The strong connection between the three Interreg projects shows the real value of working collaboratively, sharing expertise, and building a unified vision for the region’s digital maritime future. A warm thank-you to all participants, speakers, and organising partners for contributing to such a productive and inspiring event. Special appreciation also goes to Policy Area Safe’s Seppo Mäkinen for joining us in the audience, and to Ulf Siwe, who did a fantastic job as our host throughout the day. Offshore wind farms will bring more renewable energy to the Baltic Sea Region, which will be needed to replace old fossil fuel-generated electricity. The offshore wind farms’ electricity will also produce new e-fuels that will speed up the greening of transport, with the maritime sector being a prime target. “The planning and implementation of offshore wind farms requires interdisciplinary cooperation. Within the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, Policy Area Safe cooperates with policy areas for energy, maritime spatial planning, clean shipping, bioeconomy, and transport, to help find good guidelines for the countries and the prospectors. Throughout, there will be more or expanded Vessel Traffic Services systems across the region that will help increase maritime safety,” writes Ulf Siwe, Policy Area Safe Coordinator from the Sjöfartsverket. The EUSBSR PA Safe activities are striving for the Baltic Sea Region to become a leading region for maritime safety and security. The Policy Area is coordinated by the Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket) and the Liikenne- ja viestintävirasto Traficom / Transport- och kommunikationsverket Traficom.
