As employers, many of us genuinely want to support employees through difficult health challenges and personal crises. In today’s workplace, compassion matters more than ever. But there is also an important balance organizations need to consider: How do we create supportive, human workplaces without unintentionally creating privacy, compliance, or long-term data risks? I wrote this article because I think many leaders are navigating this challenge in real time. Often, the risk does not come from bad intent — it comes from caring employees and managers who simply have not been trained on where the boundaries should be. The future of employee support is not about caring less. It is about learning how to support employees responsibly.
