Partner Robert Spano (London and Paris), former president of the European Court of Human Rights, was a guest on the BBC World Service Newshour radio program. The conversation took place on the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights, created to prevent the types of atrocities seen during World War II. Robert discussed the “profound impact” the Convention has had on the European political landscape. “The big impact of the Convention has been to allow for voices in society which are vulnerable – minorities, discriminatory animus towards those that do not have political support – those voices have been heard,” he said. He also addressed the impact of the European Court on Human Rights. “We’re talking about the police having to have a law in order to wiretap people,” Robert said. “Imagine, that was not the case before the European Court of Human Rights said that was necessary.” He added that “the teachings of the Second World War, which have cropped up again in many states of Europe, have been enforced and sanctioned by the European Court of Human Rights.” Listen to the interview (starts at 37:20): https://lnkd.in/es4ATZVr
