  • Last week, Hanger representatives joined peers in Washington, D.C. for the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association (AOPA) Policy Forum, a key annual advocacy event for the O&P profession. The forum brings together clinicians, industry leaders, students, and patient advocates to meet with federal lawmakers, share the impact of O&P care, and advocate for policies that improve access and outcomes for patients. Hanger was represented by 22 affiliated attendees, including employees and patient ambassadors. Hanger also sponsored three students and three residents to attend, helping build a strong foundation in advocacy early in their careers. As the #OandP field continues to navigate challenges related to reimbursement, access, and regulation, investing in the next generation ensures the profession continues to adapt and lead. Thank you to everyone who joined the event and to all who support our local and national advocacy efforts!

In honor of #LLLDAM, we’re sharing the story of Beauden Baumkirchner, an eight-year-old boy whose life changed dramatically after what seemed like a minor childhood injury. A skinned knee led to a rare and aggressive staph infection, resulting in nearly three months in the hospital, 22 surgeries, the loss of several fingers, and ultimately, a bilateral above-knee amputation to save his life. Beauden receives care at our Phoenix, AZ #HangerClinic. His Pediatric Specialist and prosthetist, Jillian Okimoto, describes Beauden as a source of joy for everyone he meets. Jillian has been caring for Beauden since January 2021 and says watching Beauden grow—literally and figuratively—has been such a fun ride. “Everyone deserves the opportunity to participate alongside their peers—especially kids. They should be able to run through a splash pad, hang out at the beach, or play on their high school volleyball team. The goal is giving kids the right tools so they can show up fully for whatever they want to do.” She went on to share, “Raising awareness for limb loss and limb difference is so important, because most of the time, you don’t even realize that someone around you is using a prosthetic device. You don’t see the day‑to‑day challenges they face—or all the work it took to overcome those challenges to get to where they are now.” Thank you to Jillian and our entire Phoenix Hanger Clinic team for supporting Beauden and helping him achieve the unthinkable!
