I’m excited to share that I’ll be presenting at the Society for American Archaeology 91st Annual Meeting in San Francisco next week. My paper, “Mangroves and Mounds: Human Niche Construction and Early Formative Settlement in the Soconusco Estuary,” presents the cumulative results from my dissertation research in the eastern Soconusco mangrove zone of Chiapas, Mexico. This work brings together excavation, sediment coring, GPR, artifact analysis, faunal data, obsidian sourcing, and radiocarbon modeling to examine how Archaic and Early Formative communities transformed coastal environments and how those changes helped create the conditions for early sedentary village life. I’m looking forward to representing HELIX Environmental Planning, sharing this research, and reconnecting with colleagues at SAA. #SAA2026 #Archaeology #Geoarchaeology #CulturalResources #CRM #EnvironmentalPlanning #MesoamericanArchaeology #Soconusco #Chiapas #NicheConstruction #Archaeometry

The 2026 AEP California State Conference, held right in the backyard of our headquarters, had our California Planning team actively engaged with fellow professionals across the industry. We hope you got to enjoy the panel discussion on “Complex CEQA Efforts for Long-Range Campus Development” along with the walking tour of the UC San Diego campus – we’re thrilled that the UC San Diego Update to the 2018 Long Range Development Plan Subsequent EIR was recognized with a merit award for outstanding environmental analysis document!

HELIX was pleased to be a part of the completion of Nicolas Road and Calle Girasol in the City of Temecula! The eastern half of Nicolas Road was previously dirt. This project also added a new portion to the Temecula Loop Trail. HELIX provided biological and cultural surveys, obtained regulatory permits for crossing Santa Gertrudis Creek, prepared the restoration plan and long-term management plan, helped retain the long-term habitat manager, and provided biological, cultural, and paleontological monitoring during project construction.

Congratulations to The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California on certifying the EIR for Pure Water Southern California, which is expected to include one of the largest advanced water purification plants in the world! This regional recycled water supply program is a proposed partnership between Metropolitan and the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts to beneficially reuse cleaned wastewater to recharge the West Coast, Central, and Main San Gabriel groundwater basins and to augment water supplies at existing water treatment plants. HELIX is proud to have led the preparation of the EIR and technical studies for this important project.
Following more than five years of environmental analysis, outreach and public input, Metropolitan's Board of Directors voted unanimously Tuesday to certify the Final Environmental Impact Report for Pure Water Southern California. A major step toward the potential development of what would be one of the world’s largest water recycling programs. Our Northern California biologists attended the 73rd Annual Meeting of The Wildlife Society Western Section, held against the stunning backdrop of the Pacific coast in Monterey. We thoroughly enjoyed the range of sessions, speakers, and engaging with other wildlife professionals. See you next year in Sacramento!
