At HisBA’s 38th Annual Gala, Noche de Alebrijes, we celebrated the power of investing in the next generation of Hispanic legal leaders. Our scholarship recipients are future advocates, judges, public servants, and leaders who will help shape the future of the legal profession in Texas. Their stories remind us why this work matters. If you were unable to attend the Gala, you can still join the movement. Every dollar donated to the HisBA Scholarship Fund goes directly toward funding scholarships and supporting students pursuing careers in the legal profession. Your investment helps advance opportunity, elevate leadership, and empower the next generation. Texas Young Lawyers Association introduces the Spanish for Lawyer Podcast, a CLE series that expands on TYLA’s existing Spanish for Lawyers resources by offering attorneys practical tools to better serve Spanish-speaking clients. Developed in collaboration with bilingual attorneys, the series pairs real world examples with clear, digestible explanations that make legal Spanish easier to understand and apply in practice. Each episode focuses on a specific area of law, giving listeners targeted vocabulary and context they can immediately put to use. Together, these conversations highlight how bilingual and culturally fluent lawyering strengthens client relationships across practice areas. The first episode launches soon, and we’re excited for you to join us! #spanishforlawyers #tyla #younglawyers #legalspanish #legaleducation #cle #bilinguallawyers #accesstojustice

It was exciting to celebrate the naming of a faculty office after #TexasLegend and University of Houston Law Center Professor Sandra Thompson and her husband Jim Thompson. Professor Guerra Thompson currently holds the Newell Blakely Chair in Evidence. Her research takes the theoretical and moves the conversation into practical policy. She has been a leader in reforming the Harris County Forensics Lab which led to her book “Cops in Labcoats.”More recently she has served as deputy monitor on issues of bail reform. She is beloved by students who affectionately refer to her as the “Notorious SGT.” She has received multiple teaching awards including the prestigious University of Houston Distinguished Leadership in Teaching Excellence Award and the University of Houston Law Center prestigious Ethel Baker Award for community service. Most notably she is the first Hispanic woman to be tenured at a Texas law school as well as the first to hold a named chair. We’re proud of all Professor Guerra Thompson’s many accomplishments and are very grateful that she and her husband Jim have generously named as faculty office at University of Houston Law Center. Since the John M. O’Quinn Law Building is paid for, the proceeds of this gift will go towards student scholarships. Thank you for paving the way forward for those who will follow.
