For our first ever episode of HBJ On the Record, Sean McCrory and I sat down with Phillips 66 CEO Mark Lashier to learn more about how his company is responding to the various geopolitical changes happening around the world. Mark told us that Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, the joint venture between Phillips 66 and Chevron, is doing well under current conditions, particularly because its asset base is largely in North America — more insulated from the feedstock supply issues coming out of the Strait of Hormuz — and because the lifting of sanctions on Venezuelan oil has stopped China from buying discounted crude and flooding the market with cheap product. “Times have been so tough that not many investments have been made. And so as we look forward, 2027, 2028, 2029, things continue to get tight, and the economics of operating those assets dramatically improves. And it's dramatically improved in the last month because of the disruptions in the Middle East,” Lashier said.
