Growing up in Indiana, basketball wasn't a sport. It was a religion. And Larry Bird was the prophet. My parents sat in Hulman Center in Terre Haute and watched every single game of that 1979 ISU season. The highest-rated NCAA Championship game in history. A kid from French Lick who had no business being the best player on the floor... and yet somehow always was. I watched those clips growing up. Not just to appreciate the talent. But to understand something deeper. Bird wasn't the fastest. Wasn't the most athletic. He was relentless. He out-worked everyone in the gym before anyone else arrived. He studied the game until he could predict what would happen before it did. He willed himself into situations where talent alone would have failed. That's not a basketball story. That's a blueprint. I carried that mentality into medicine. Into surgery. Into building the Indiana Orthopedic Institute against every institutional headwind you can imagine. The moments that defined my career didn't happen when everything was working. They happened when it wasn't. When the case got complicated. When the partnership got hard. When the conventional path said stop and something internal said: not yet. Research backs this up. Angela Duckworth's landmark work on grit found that effort counts twice in the equation of achievement. Talent x effort = skill. Skill x effort = achievement. Bird understood this before the science did. Here's what I've taken from watching a kid from Terre Haute become a legend: Outwork the room. Talent sets the floor. Effort raises the ceiling. Study the system. Bird didn't just play basketball. He understood it. Know your field at a level others won't bother to reach. Thrive in the hard moment. The clutch shot, the difficult case, the impossible negotiation... those are what separate good from legendary. Embrace being underestimated. Bird used it as fuel. So should you. Compete with yourself first. His standard wasn't the opponent. It was his own ceiling. Indiana gave me a lot of things. A hometown. A work ethic. A standard. Larry Bird showed me what it looked like when someone refused to accept the version of themselves that everyone else expected. That chip on the shoulder? I never put it down. What's the moment in your career where refusing to quit changed everything? Also, I write a publication about disrupting the norm in medical research, orthopedic surgery and entrepreneurship.
