About us
Inwood Academy for Leadership is a free, public charter school that empowers students to become agents for change through community-focused leadership, character development, and college preparedness. We were founded on the belief that all children deserve a quality education and that a child’s access to a great education should not be limited by his or her family’s income or zip code. Our service to students extends beyond the school day and beyond their high school graduation. We opened our doors to our first class of 110 fifth graders in 2010, graduated our first class of seniors in 2018, and 10 years later are supporting our alumni until they earn their college degree or enter the career of their choice. Students are given a preference in our open lottery if they are an English Language Learner living in the school district in which our school is located. Applying siblings of students enrolled in Inwood Academy for Leadership are also given preference for a seat.

Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School reposted this
💬 “Our priority is ensuring that every student and family feels a strong sense of belonging. From there, we nurture their growth and empower them to become leaders in their community and beyond.” At Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School, belonging isn’t just a value — it’s a lived practice. Dean of Student Intervention Services, Giselle Tejada, has spent more than a decade strengthening systems of support for multilingual learners and students with disabilities. From creating scaffolding and rigor guides to launching bilingual family newsletters and IEP resources, her work ensures that both teachers and families have the tools they need to help students thrive. In this conversation with our own Rene Minnocci, Giselle shares how Inwood Academy’s “Belong, Grow, Lead” mission comes to life through intentional collaboration, clear communication, and a deep belief in community. Leadership develops when students serve with purpose. 💙 Our High School Trailblazers partnered with our Family & Community Engagement team to prepare for the IAL Boutique & Toy Giveaway Event, strengthening empathy, responsibility, and leadership skills that support college readiness and lifelong impact. This is how we empower students to become agents for change through community-focused leadership and character development.

Yes, the word Leadership is in our school name. But we don't just teach leadership — it's something our graduates live. Pictured here are Alumni Maria (Class of 2019) and Alumni Jasmin (Class of 2020), two exceptional leaders reviewing systems and strengthening the very school that shaped them. They are part of the 15+ alumni who now work across our organization — serving in administration, operations, assistant teaching, athletics, coaching, and event support. Their return is a powerful testament to a school culture rooted in belonging, purpose, and community impact. We’re also immensely proud of our College & Career Readiness program, which ensures every student has a strong postsecondary support system. From career exploration to alumni mentoring, our team prepares students to thrive beyond high school and become leaders in the world. When students experience an environment where they are valued, challenged, and supported, they grow into adults who lead with heart and often come back to invest in the next generation. We’re proud of our alumni and the legacy they continue to build at Inwood Academy. #LeadershipInAction #AlumniSuccess #CollegeAndCareerReadiness #CareerPathways #EducationLeadership #CharterSchools #K12Education #StudentSuccess

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday, and Inwood Academy for Leadership is inviting our community to help bring history to life for our students. We are raising funds to support experiential learning trips to places like Gettysburg, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia — experiences that help students connect what they learn in class to the world around them. Our students are already demonstrating what’s possible: -62% of 1st graders grew two grade levels in math -82% of 8th graders passed Algebra I Regents; half passed two Regents before high school -Our high school graduation rate averages 93%, outpacing NYC, District, and State averages These trips deepen understanding, build confidence, and help our Trailblazers see themselves as part of a larger story. If you believe in educational equity and meaningful learning, we invite you to join us tomorrow: https://lnkd.in/e_QtGwzR
