How will El Niño affect hurricanes? NASA satellites are helping improve predictions. During El Niño, weaker winds allow heat to spread east toward South America. This can shift hurricane activity from the Atlantic to the Pacific. NASA and European Sentinel-6 satellites are measuring sea level height to help scientists better understand ocean heat and improve hurricane predictions. Sentinel-6 data feeds into hurricane tracking algorithms that can inform disaster response. Sentinel-6B and Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich make up the Copernicus Sentinel-6/Jason-CS mission, the latest in a series of missions that have continuously monitored Earth’s ocean since the 1990s. A new, flexible antenna designed for NASA’s SkyFall Mars helicopters has been put through its paces in JPL’s In-Situ Instrument Laboratory. This ground penetrating radar antenna will hunt for frozen water beneath the Martian surface ⏤ a critical resource for future astronauts. “The only way to detect shallow subsurface ice remotely is to fly close to the ground,” said Adrian Tang, SkyFall’s ground-penetrating radar lead instrument scientist at JPL. “By flying low and slow, a SkyFall helicopter could capture radar images that resolve the fine layering where dry soil gives way to ice, detecting its presence and mapping its extent.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ej_fG2Rz

On July 20, 1976, NASA's Viking 1 lander successfully touched down on the Red Planet, opening the era of Mars surface exploration. In the five decades since, each new mission has built on Viking's foundation. We've driven rovers across ancient lakebeds, flown the first aircraft on another planet, captured millions of images, analyzed Martian rocks and atmosphere, and transformed our understanding of Mars as a dynamic world.
