Shout out to LSNYC client Brenda Quinn for going to bat for civil legal services providers across the state in an op-ed in amNewYork. Brenda, whom LSNYC helped stay in her home, urged Gov. Hochul to fully fund IOLA (which supports legal service groups across the state) so that every struggling New Yorker can access the free legal help they need just like she and her husband did. So many New Yorkers are struggling to get by right now with an ever-increasing cost of living, a housing crisis, and day-to-day setbacks that put stability just out of reach. Thankfully, Legal Services NYC is here to help see them through another day, but we need Gov. Hochuls' support in fully funding IOLA (interest on lawyers account) in this year's budget to meet New Yorkers' growing demand for our services. CONGRATULATIONS to our own Rosalind Black, LSNYC's Citywide Housing Director, who was just appointed to the newly formed New York City Housing Court Practice and Policy Advisory Committee—a group convened by Chief Administrative Judge Joseph A. Zayas to take a hard look at systemic challenges affecting the quality of justice in NYC housing courts. We could not be prouder of Roz and know that she will do an amazing job representing tenants’ interests. https://lnkd.in/eWAv6SM2

NYC is facing its worst affordability crisis in a century, with more than 50% of NYers paying over 30% of their income towards rent. With so many at risk of eviction, it's more important than ever for NYS to increase funding to legal providers like LSNYC in this year's budget so we can continue to provide free services that keep NYers on a path to long-term housing stability. LSNYC fights for justice for all New Yorkers. We stop evictions, protect immigrants, and help stabilize entire communities. Which is why it is more important than ever for Gov. Hochul to fund the $102.5m IOLA request and grant the senate's $50m increase to ensure more NYers don't fall through the cracks. Watch the video to learn more about what's at stake.

NYC's poverty rate increased for a third consecutive year in 2024 to 26%--roughly 2.2 million NYers, according the Robin Hood Foundation. NYers are struggling, which is why it is more important than ever for Gov. Hochul fully fund IOLA in the state budget so groups like us can continue to uplift and stabilize families. Legal Services NYC reposted this
In early March, we joined legislators and advocates in Albany to urge full funding for HOPP in the final state budget and codification. With foreclosures rising and federal protections eroding, the need for free housing counseling and legal services has never been greater. New York homeowners can feel supported through the services the HOPP network provides. It was great to see many members in our “Fund HOPP Make it Law” campaign! 🏠 Read The Center's full press release here: https://lnkd.in/egRx4tXZ
