At LogiPharma USA in Boston this week, Swisslog's Garrett Freeman shared with Pharmaceutical Commerce that the case for warehouse automation in pharma has flipped. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, automation was often sold on efficiency and fewer labor hours. Freeman now hears manufacturers asking for redundant, resilient supply chains and more network capacity at the same time. Onshoring commitments and sourcing strategy are driving part of that shift. Holding enough material stateside to ride out a disruption takes physical capacity, and Freeman sees automation as one of the ways manufacturers are building it. He also points to the shift toward biologics and self-injectables, which is changing the transportation and temperature-control demands these networks have to meet.
