NEXT IN A VIDEO SERIES | Panel discussions at the ATCA Technical Symposium in Atlantic City – Operational Transition and NAS Continuity in a BNATCS Environment The introduction of BNATCS capabilities into the National Airspace System (NAS) requires careful coordination to maintain safe, reliable operations while legacy systems remain in service. This panel focused on operational strategies that ensure NAS continuity during phased deployment, including parallel operations management, fallback and reversion procedures, transition sequencing, and operational readiness criteria. Our panelists were: ✈️ Moderator: David Almeida, Director Technical Strategy, LS Technologies ✈️ Douglas Lieberman, Deputy Business Area Lead and CTO for Transportation Solutions, Leidos ✈️ Steve McMahon, Transportation Strategy and Mission Growth, Noblis ✈️ Dr. Stephane Mondoloni, Managing Director, MITRE The panelists discuss the frameworks and practices used to mitigate risk, preserve service reliability, and maintain situational awareness throughout the modernization process. What was emphasized: The operational decision-making approaches that enable safe, uninterrupted air traffic management during the BNATCS transition. "This is our moonshot, but nobody is going to stop flying to see if we launch this successfully or not,” Almeida said. Lieberman, talking about the transition journey, said, "There's thousands of these little intricacies and complexities. It's not just the knowns but all the unknowns; things that feed off the system that were not part of the original intent. "The minute you change something, there are other systems that will say, 'wait a second' and something will stop working. That complexity ... we will have to be highly resilient and highly reactive to things that are unknown and that will be the key." On this Memorial Day, Tetra Tech remembers and honors the military service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. A few of us had the opportunity to participate in the FAA and Industry Charity Golf Tournament, hosted by our teammate DTIS. It was a great way to spend the day with the FAA community while supporting this year’s benefactor, Hero's Bridge, an organization dedicated to supporting U.S. veterans through meaningful connections, resources, and ongoing support. Proud to be part of a community that shows up for each other and for causes that matter.
