Very greatful for the opportunity to present some of my dissertation research at the Plant and Animal Genome Conference in San Diego this week. This was not only my first time at PAG, but also my first time presenting research as Dr! I've had a great time networking, learning, and soaking up the California sun!
🎄GGS Holiday Party 🎄 After a hectic semester, it was wonderful to unwind and spend quality time together! We celebrated by relaxing with movies and decorating Christmas cookies, which is a perfect way to kick off the holiday season🍪✨ We’re looking forward to everything the new year will bring. We are thrilled to celebrate Mamta Nirmal on successfully passing her comprehensive exam yesterday 🎉 She delivered an excellent talk titled: “Non-canonical role of Elongator complex protein 1 (Elp1) in epigenetic regulation of sub-telomeric heterochromatin.” In addition to reaching candidacy, Mamta also recently first-authored a publication in Genetics: “Deletion of Elongator Protein 1 (Elp1) relieves heterochromatin defects in a Pol II mutant of 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘻𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘺𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘦.” DOI: https://lnkd.in/eb-bkRxr We are incredibly proud of the talent and high-achieving scholars, like Mamta, coming out of our program 🤩

I am excited to announce that I passed my comprehensive exam and am now officially a PhD candidate! A big thanks to the Thompson Lab, my committee, and my peers in the MSU Genetics and Genome Sciences Program for their support!
🍂 Fall Semester GGS Outreach Activites🍂 Over the past few weeks, our graduate students had the opportunity to volunteer at STEM expos at Bath Elementary and Mt. Hope STEAM Magnet School! We engaged with students through hands-on science activities, including: 🧬 DNA Building Blocks, where kids explored the double helix structure 👅 PTC taste strips, where students discoved their taste genotype 🌿 Cilantro taste test, where children learned whether they have the “soapy taste” gene A huge thank you to the schools for inviting us, to all the students who volunteered their time, and to our amazing outreach coordinators from the GSO, Mamta Nirmal and Aishwarya Bhurke Singh, for helping make these events possible!
