For years, many South Carolina families had to leave the state to access inpatient pediatric rehabilitation services. Today, children recovering from serious injuries, illnesses, and surgeries can receive that care closer to home at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Through intensive, multidisciplinary therapy, the inpatient pediatric rehabilitation unit helps patients regain skills that support everyday childhood activities like communication, mobility, learning, and play. Over the past year, the program has expanded access to specialized pediatric recovery care across the state while allowing care teams to witness more of their patients’ progress firsthand. There's a lot that happens behind the scenes before a patient transport flight ever takes off. For the MEDUCARE pediatric and neonatal team, mornings are spent coordinating responsibilities, checking equipment, and preparing for the range of scenarios the day may bring. When the call comes in, there is no time to pause. This team mobilizes quickly, working together to deliver advanced care to children and newborns across South Carolina, often covering long distances in just a few hours. Sometimes support can be as simple as a cup of coffee during a long shift or a snack at the bedside. For five years, the Hospitality Cart program, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston, has supported patients, families, and care team members at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and the R. Keith Summey Medical Pavilion. These carts offer small comforts, like snacks, drinks, and activities, that help make long days in our care environments a little easier. We are thankful for this ongoing partnership and for the dedicated volunteers who bring this program to life. #ImWhatsPossible

Behind every complex pediatric cardiac procedure is a highly specialized team working in coordination to support the child’s care. Pediatric perfusionists are part of that team, managing circulation and oxygenation when children require heart-lung bypass or advanced cardiopulmonary support during surgery. Their work is often not visible to families, but they are an essential part of delivering safe, coordinated treatment for children with complex medical needs. #ImWhatsPossible

This Mother’s Day, we’re recognizing nurses at MUSC Children’s Health whose introduction to the profession came through early exposure to nursing in their own families. When six-year-old Charlie arrived at MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center with serious bleeding following a tonsillectomy, our care teams were ready to step in. From the emergency department to the surgery team, Charlie’s family shared that every member of the care team helped keep them calm during one of the scariest moments of their lives. Last month, we held our very first ECMO reunion, bringing together former patients, families and care teams. ECMO stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, a specialized therapy that temporarily supports heart and lung function, allowing the body time to recover after severe organ failure. The reunion gave families the chance to reconnect with our pediatric ECMO teams and share how life has looked since their time in the hospital. “We’re very fortunate that our leadership supports this program the way it does, and MUSC can be here for the greater community, not only here locally but for the entire state,” said Dr. Laura Hollinger, pediatric ECMO medical director.
