Today, we observe Martin Luther King Jr./Della Keats Day, a time to honor two remarkable individuals whose legacies continue to inspire us. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a vision for a more just society that continues to guide efforts toward positive change across the nation. In Alaska, we also celebrate the life of Della Keats, a respected Iñupiaq healer with roots in the NANA region. Her profound knowledge of traditional medicine and her dedication to the well-being of her community left a lasting impact that is felt to this day.

In 2001, with the support of the NANA Board of Directors and Maniilaq Association, the Regional Elders Council hosted an Elders conference in Kotzebue. This gathering provided our Elders the opportunity to share their wisdom and lessons passed down through generations. Today, we are honored to share some of the advice that was collected during that event.
