National Bison Association

Last night, we hosted a bison event on Capitol Hill led by WCS’s Adam Falk and John Calvelli. We were joined by our American Bison Coalition partners, the Intertribal Buffalo Council and the National Bison Association.   It was a celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the American bison as the U.S.’s National Mammal—a designation that came about due to a national Wildlife Conservation Society-led campaign with bipartisan political support among conservationists, tribal leaders, ranchers, zoos, and civic organizations.   Over the years, the National Bison recognition has shown to be more than a symbolic naming. Today, it continues to serve as a platform for advancing efforts to return bison to larger landscapes where they can once again fulfill their vital ecological role.   The Association of Zoos and Aquariums, World Wildlife Fund, Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America, and North American Bison, LLC were also important contributors to the event.   Thank you to all of the attendees for helping us celebrate this unifying icon.

On May 9, 2016, President Barack Obama signed the bipartisan Bison Legacy Act, officially recognizing the North American bison as our National Mammal. The legislation celebrated the species’ extraordinary recovery from near extinction and acknowledged its deep ties to Indigenous peoples, its role in shaping the American West, and its growing importance in regenerative agriculture and conservation. The effort to secure this designation was led by a broad coalition, including the National Bison Association (NBA), the InterTribal Buffalo Council (ITBC), and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) — a testament to the shared commitment to honoring and protecting this iconic species. The latest Drought Monitor shows considerable dryness across the western & southern U.S. Here's to hoping moisture visits these regions soon.

Rest is a powerful tool for young bison calves. In between spurts of running and playing, bison calves spend the majority of their time resting. On average, calves may lie down and rest for up to 18 to 21 hours per day. During that time, they may only have 1 to 2 hours of deep sleep. The rest of the time is spent resting, ruminating, and dozing, just like adult bison. After the first few weeks, the calves will gradually spend more time awake and moving around rather than resting. #bison #nationalbison #bisoncalves #resttime #sunpuddles #springtime #growing

Young Bull Prices Continue to Rise The latest USDA National Monthly Bison Report shows the price ranchers received for Young Bulls continues to rise. The average March price ticked up to $5.15 per pound. That's 28 cents higher than at this time last year. Young Bull carcasses average 678 lbs.   No price was listed for Young Heifers as of today. However, the report does feature a price update for Aged Cows. That category came in at $4.25 per pound. The average carcass weight of Aged Cows was 557 lbs.   A total of 4,381were slaughtered in March. That brings the year-to-date total to 13,779.    Per the report, total submitted wholesale volume was 515,629 lbs. Compared to February, prices of Wholesale Cuts were higher on higher volume. Prices of Wholesale Trim and Grind was lower on lower volume compared to February. Live Canadian imports for March (4 weeks) were six percent lower and FIS Actual Slaughter was 11 percent higher than February (4 weeks). https://lnkd.in/gCazJH9q
