Becoming an ocean advocate starts with learning about the ocean! 💙🌊 Over the past two weekends, our educators have been inviting guests to join us in being advocates for the ocean by sharing some ocean issues that are important to the Aquarium. From building climate resilience and protecting endangered species to supporting scientific research and balancing use of the ocean, these pop-up engagements are all about helping people learn more about how collectively we can make a difference. There’s still one more chance to join us! Stop by our final pop-up engagement this Saturday to chat with our educators, learn more about ocean advocacy, and find ways to get involved. About us
The New England Aquarium is a catalyst for global change through public engagement, commitment to marine animal conservation, leadership in education, innovative scientific research, and effective advocacy for vital and vibrant oceans. It is the only Boston-based cultural institution with a mission focused primarily on the environment, promoting the importance of protecting the blue planet through innovative exhibits and educational programs. These are some highlights of the Aquarium’s mission in action, on exhibit, and through our education, conservation, and research programs here on Central Wharf and around the globe. -The Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank and the New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center showcase the diversity and importance of marine animals. -The Giant Ocean Tank inspires visitors with the beauty and complexity of marine habitat through replication of a Caribbean coral reef. -Aquarium educators lead a nationwide initiative on climate change and inspire future ocean protectors with hands-on programs such as Harbor Discoveries Camps and live blue™ Ambassadors. -The Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue Team leads regional efforts to rehabilitate and release endangered species of sea turtles at our state-of-the-art Animal Care Center. -Aquarium scientists advise some of the nation’s largest seafood companies on methods to enhance the sustainability of commercial fisheries worldwide. -The Aquarium is home to the world’s longest-running right whale research program, coordinating efforts along the East Coast of the U.S. to restore the population of this endangered species. -The Aquarium collaborates with partners around the world to protect ocean ecosystems, such as coral reefs. In 2008, we partnered with the island nation of Kiribati and Conservation International to create the Phoenix Islands Protected Area. Thank you to everyone who joined us for Massachusetts #RightWhaleDay 2026! 🐋👏 On Friday, we celebrated the North Atlantic right whale and helped raise awareness about the important efforts to protect this critically endangered species. The event brought together policymakers, advocates, Aquarium researchers, and organizations to share their work to advance right whale conservation. Guests enjoyed free educational activities, watched a special performance by the eco-dance company Liquid Spine, and talked with Aquarium educators and scientists from the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life to learn why protecting right whales matters. We were honored to partner with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs and the Massachusetts Environmental Trust (MET) Right Whale license plate program for this event. Thank you to Representative Kathy LaNatra, Senator Bruce Tarr, and Commissioner Tom O’Shea for joining us and sharing the critical work the legislature is doing to support ocean conservation and protect ocean health. Thank you to Governor Maura Healey for declaring April 24, 2026, as Right Whale Day and to Jeff Porter (MET) for presenting the proclamation, which was accepted by Right Whale Day founder Matt Delaney from Representative LaNatra. We also want to give a big thank you to our staff, conservationists, policymakers, and experts who joined us to support this event and help protect this amazing species. Congratulations to our President and CEO Vikki Spruill on making Boston Magazine's list of 150 Most Influential Bostonians for her inspirational leadership and dedication to protecting the blue planet! 👏🌊 #150mostinfluential2026 #ProtectTheBluePlanet
Grateful to be included in Boston Magazine's #150mostinfluential2026 list, and even more grateful for what it represents. I came to the New England Aquarium because I believe the ocean and its relationship to our climate is the defining issue of our time. Warmer water. Acidifying seas. Endangered right whales. Cold-stunned sea turtles washing ashore on Cape Cod. These aren't abstract problems. They're happening in our backyard, and they demand urgent, science-driven action. What gives me hope is the team around me. The researchers at our Anderson Cabot Center, the biologists at our Sea Turtle Hospital, the educators welcoming over a million visitors a year to Central Wharf, our Boards of Trustees and Ambassadors. They turn that urgency into results every single day. Boston has always been a city that takes on hard problems. Looking at my fellow honorees, that hasn't changed. There's no more important time to protect our blue planet. The work for a vital and vibrant ocean continues. https://lnkd.in/e4vStqZb
