Trusting in the Power and Potential of People. Since 1869.
About us
At The New York Foundling, we believe that all people—no matter circumstance or zip code—have the opportunity to reach their full potential. But for all of us, discovering what we are capable of and reaching our full potential requires support along the way. We believe and trust in the potential of all people. We work in partnership with more than 30,000 children, adults, and families each year on their own paths to stability, strength, and independence. We believe in the power of personal choice and self-determination. The New York Foundling has deliberately challenged the notion that individuals are limited by their circumstances or are incapable of making the right choice for their future. Rather, our network of programs, services, and opportunities are carefully designed for children, families, and adults to create transformational change in their own lives. We believe and invest in proven practices. With nearly 150 years of experience creating resources, tools, and social capital, we have learned from our community what works. At the same time, we’re not afraid to invest in bold new approaches that comprehensively address challenges and provide the foundation for people to drive their own future.

Happy Mothers’ Day from The Foundling! Our commitment to mothers across our communities runs strong – and our holistic approach helps mothers feel celebrated, appreciated, and supported each day. For example, our Healthy Families program in Staten Island not only provides new parents with prenatal support, parenting skills, and resources, but offers opportunities for them to connect with their peers and form a community. Melanie Hartzog, President and CEO of The New York Foundling, speaks at "Who Cares for New York? Wages, Human Service Workers, and Affordability", a panel hosted by CUNY Institute for State & Local Governance. We’ve built a system where the people providing human care services can’t afford to stay in New York State. When pay doesn’t match the cost of living, turnover isn’t surprising, it’s inevitable. The solution is clear, invest in the workforce. BUMP UP THE PAY. 📣 #BUMPNewYork

Jennifer Jones Austin, CEO of FPWA, speaks it right. Human services leaders, providers, and advocates came together with one message: BUMP UP THE PAY. Human services workers are essential to our communities, yet we have allowed them to earn wages that do not cover the basic costs of living. The people delivering these services deserve fair pay. #BUMPNewYork
