If you’ve noticed your mortgage payment creeping higher over the past few years, you’re not alone. For many homeowners, rising insurance costs are a big reason why. We analyzed homeowners insurance policies tied to roughly 1.2 million Newrez-serviced residential mortgage loans with escrowed, preferred homeowners insurance and found the average annual premium increased 64% from year-end 2021 to year-end 2025, reaching $2,625. Premiums also varied widely by region, influenced by factors like severe weather and rebuilding costs. That said, there are signs of moderation. While premiums rose at a double‑digit pace between 2022 and 2024, growth slowed in 2025 to 10%, the slowest rate of increase since 2021. And for some homeowners, savings may be available. Newrez customers who switched insurance carriers through digital insurtech platform Matic, and for whom prior premium data was known, saved an average of $928 last year.
